JWU Men's Basketball Defeats Anna Maria, 92-58 In GNAC Quarterfinals

Providence, R.I. – Six players scored in double-figures as the third-seeded Johnson & Wales University men's basketball team posted a 92-58 victory against sixth-seeded Anna Maria in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship at the Wildcat Center on Tuesday evening.

Johnson & Wales was led by senior Curtis Lucas (Providence, R.I.) who scored a game-high 18 points and added three assists while fellow senior Esaie Touze (Providence, R.I.) notched his 10th double-double of the year with 11 points and 10 rebounds in the victory.  Sophomore Quarry Greenaway (Westchester, N.Y.) tallied 17 points and seven rebounds while fellow sophomore Tom Garrick (Seekonk, Mass.) notched 13 points and seven boards for the Wildcats.  Sophomore Robert Lewis (Baltimore, Md.) and senior Frank Robinson (Providence, R.I.) were each in double-figures with 12 and 10 respectively for JWU.

Senior Joseph Barillo (Dania Beach, Fla.) had 12 points and three rebounds in the loss for Anna Maria.

Johnson & Wales raced out to the early 16-5 lead on a three-point play by Lewis with 13:54 left in the first half.  The Wildcats continued to build on their lead throughout the stanza and took the 40-19 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.  JWU shot 51.7% (15-for-29) from the field for the half and had a 20-11 advantage on the glass.  They also forced the AMCats into nine turnovers and held the visitors to 30.4% (7-for-23) shooting.

It was more of the same in the second half with the Wildcats leading by as many as 41 points after a free throw by Greenaway to make the score 89-48 with just over four minutes left on the clock.  The Wildcats then cruised to the 92-58 win.

With the victory the Wildcats improves to 20-6 while Anna Maria wraps up the 2013-14 campaign with a 9-17 record.  JWU will return to action on Thursday, February 27th when they travel to third-seeded St. Joseph's of Maine for the semifinals of the tournament at 7:00 p.m.
