In an unbelievable turn of events, Spalding forward, senior William Barber, hits a 60 ft. shot with .9 of a second left on the clock to lift the Golden Eagles to a 69-66 victory over SLIAC opponent Westminster College. Barber's shot not only won the game for Spalding but the shot clinched the SLIAC's no. 1 spot for the Golden Eagles; this marks Spalding's second consecutive regular season conference championship.

Barber shined this afternoon at DSG, as Spalding celebrated its seniors. Not only did he hit the game winning shot, he led all scorers with 20 points. Senior Domonique Sangester also had a good night, matching his season high of 16 points; he finished the game on 6 of 8 shooting and grabbed 5 rebounds.

Brandon Moore was the top scorer for Westminster with 18 points and Verdis Lee, Jr. finished with 14 points.

In the first 3 minutes of the game, Spalding, led by four seniors, got off to a 7-2 lead; a lead that would not last too long. Over the next four minutes, the Blue Jays were not only able to close the gap, they took a 9-7 lead with 13:25 remaining in the half. The next 13 minutes of the game seemed to be a one-sided battle as Westminster ended the half outscoring the Golden Eagles 33 to 19 to take a commanding 42-26 halftime lead.

Spalding ended the half shooting 11 of 32 (32.4%) from the field and shot just 1 of 9 from behind the arc. Westminster hit 5 of 6 3-pointers in the first half and ended the half shooting 16-of-29 (55.2%) from the field.

Trailing by 16 at the half, Spalding had a lot of work to do to get back in the game. The Golden Eagles came out strong and were able to chip away at Westminster's lead; with 15:40 left in the game Spalding was within 10 (46-36). Over the next 10 minutes Spalding continued to chip away at the Blue Jays lead and with 5:56 left in the game Westminster's lead was cut to 56-55. The Blue Jays would hold on to the lead until a shot by senior Thomas Blackemore tied the game for Spalding at 66-66 with 40 seconds left in the game. When Spalding took a timeout with 36 seconds left to play no one could predict what would happen next. With possession of the ball and ultimate control of the game, Westminster turned the ball over on a shot clock violation with .9 of a second remaining in the game, which gave Spalding one last chance to win. With .9 of a second on the clock, Barber took the inbounds pass from Sangester just above the Westminster three-point line, turned and hit a 60 ft. shot to give the Golden Eagles a 69-66 comeback victory.

Barber got a hot hand scoring 17 of his 20 points in the second half, including the game winning shot. Spalding shot 15 of 25 (60%) from the field in the second half ending the game shooting 45.6%.

With the win Spalding will play host to the 2014 SLIAC Men's Basketball Tournament, scheduled for February 27 and March 1 at DSG. Spalding will rematch Westminster in the first round, tipoff is Thursday, February 27 at 8:00 p.m., ET.
