Lynchburg Men Down Shenandoah University on the Road 74-67
WINCHESTER, VA – The Lynchburg College men's basketball team picked up a big Old Dominion Athletic Conference road win Saturday, downing Shenandoah University 74-67.
The two teams were tied at 12 with 13:48 left in the first half when LC took advantage of the hot hand of Austen Arnold. The sophomore, Arnold, made a jumper to put LC up two. Following a turnover by SU, Arnold drove the lane and was fouled connecting on a layup. He hit the subsequent free throw to extend the Lynchburg lead to 17-12.
Jimi Starks made a layup for Shenandoah and Arnold contributed two more from the charity stripe, to finish a run where he scored seven straight points for LC. That lead would last as Shenandoah was unable to get any closer than two the rest of the way.
Avery Green scored a layup with 3:06 remaining to cut the gap to five, 67-62, but the Lynchburg defense held Shenandoah without a field goal until the last possession of the game. SU was forced to foul and Lynchburg converted on the free throw attempts, shooting 64% (16-for-25) for the game.
Alex Graves finished with 18 points and 13 boards for Lynchburg while Arnold added 17 points and five rebounds. Manny Hernandez ended with 12 points and eight caroms for LC.
Green led all scorers with 28 points for Shenandoah (12-11/4-10). Xavier Alston added eight points and 11 rebounds for SU. Jared Carithers, the ninth-ranked scorer in the ODAC (14.9 ppg) was held to just six on 2-of-12 shooting by the Lynchburg defense.
Lynchburg (16-6/9-4) hosts Washington and Lee University (6-17/3-11) Monday night at 7 p.m. in a game that was rescheduled from last Wednesday due to the snow storm.
