Brooklyn Falls to York, 70-57; Snap Six Game Winning Streak

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team had its season-high six-game winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon, as the Cardinals of York College defeated the Bulldogs by a score of 70-57 at the West Quad Center in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) action.

With the loss, BC drops to 11-13 overall on the season and 7-8 in the CUNYAC; while York improves to 17-7 overall on the year and 12-3 in conference play.

The Cardinals have now swept the season series over Brooklyn, as York defeated the Bulldogs, 107-93, back on December 10th in Jamaica, NY.

The teams combined for three ties and two lead changes through the first six minutes of the game. Following a layup from sophomore Jamel Gistthat tied the game at 11-11 with 14:06 in the opening half, the Cardinals rattled off five straight points to go up, 16-11, with 12:10 on the clock. Jaron Williams scored all five points to fuel the York surge.

The Cardinals would never relinquish its lead the rest of the way, as the visitors would go on to extend its advantage to double figures, taking their largest lead of the game, 36-21, at the half.

York continued to build on its lead by scoring the first six points of the second half to go up 21, 42-21, with 18:36 remaining in the game. Brooklyn would end its scoring drought at the 17:52 on a free throw from junior Justin Staton that made it 42-22.

The Cardinals advantage would never be threatened as York would lead by as many as 23 on two occasions en route to cruising to its 13-point victory, 70-57.

BC was led by junior Jai Kellman who led all scorers with a game-high 21 points coming off the bench. Staton grabbed 10 rebounds, to go along with seven points, while Gist added eight points, five assists and five rebounds. Sophomore Egzon Gjonbalaj chipped in with nine points, eight rebounds and three blocks.

York was led by Michael Woods, who led the team with 19 points. Woods entered the game averaging 28.8 ppg, which ranks second in the nation. Williams finished the game with 15 points, to go along with a game-high 15 rebounds, to register a double-double. Williams also added five blocks to his impressive stat line. Justin Garvin dished out five assists, to go with nine points.

For the game, BC was held to 30.4% (21-for-69) shooting from the field and 30.8% (8-for-26) from three. The Bulldogs also struggled from the free throw line, converting just 43.8% (7-for-16) from the stripe.

York shot 45.6% (26-for-57) from the field and 22.2% (4-for-18) from beyond the arc. The Cardinals also went 14-for-25 (56.0%) from the line.

Brooklyn will conclude its regular season on Tuesday, February 18th, as the Bulldogs will welcome the Bloodhounds of John Jay College of Criminal Justice to the West Quad Center. The CUNYAC match is scheduled for a 7:15 tip.

Both teams will enter the game with identical 7-8 records in CUNYAC play. The winner will likely earn the #4 seed in the upcoming CUNYAC championships and earn home court advantage for the quarterfinals round.
