Thomas More's Rally Falls Short in 74-67 Loss at Thiel

(GREENVILLE, Pa.) – The Thomas More College men's basketball team's second half rally fell short today (Saturday, February 15, 2014) as the Saints fell, 74-67, to Thiel College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at Beeghly Gymnasium in Greenville, Pennsylvania.

With the loss, the Saints fall to 12-10 overall and 11-3 in the PAC.  With the win, the Tomcats improve to 9-12 overall and 6-9 in the PAC.

Thomas More jumped out to a 7-4 lead with 16:13 to play in the first half when junior guard/forward Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) made two free-throws.  Thiel answered with a 27-9 run to take a 31-16 led when Khari Bess made one-of-two free-throws with 6:26 to play in the half.  The Saints responded with a 7-2 run to cut the lead to 33-23 on two free-throws by senior forward Brandon Housley (Covington, Ky./Holmes) made two free-throws with 4:29 to play in the opening half.  The Tomcats closed out the half on an 8-4 run to take a 41-27 lead at halftime.

The Saints opened the second half on a 9-4 run capped by two free-throws by junior forward Jalen Clark (Frankfort, Ky./Western Hills) to cut the lead to 45-36 with 15:07 to play in the game.  Thiel responded with a 9-5 run to increase the lead to 54-41 with 12:33 to play in the game on a Josh Lumbus lay-up.  Thomas More answered with a 23-13 run to cut the lead to 67-64 when senior forward Josef Marshall (Dayton, Ohio/Trotwood Madison) made a jumper with 2;32 to play in the game.  That would be as close as the Saints would come as Thiel closed out the game on a 7-3 run for the 74-67 victory.

Mumford led five Saints in double-figure scoring with 17 points.  Joining him in double-figures was Clark with 14 points, Marshall with 11, while Housley and senior guard D'Carlo Hayes (Louisville, Ky./Male) each finished with 10 points.  Clark led the team in rebounds with five, blocked shots with three and steals with three, while senior guard Spencer Berlekamp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings)  led the team in assists with six.

Thomas More returns to the hardwood on Wednesday (February 19) when it travels to Bethany, West Virginia to play Bethany College.  Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Hummel Field House.
