BUFFALO, NY— Justin Mitchell (Buffalo/Timon) finished with 28 points and nine rebounds, but it was not enough as No. 19 Brockport (18-2/12-1) claimed a 94-74 victory over host Buffalo State (11-11/7-8) in a SUNYAC game tonight at the Sports Arena.
Roderick Epps (Uniondale/Uniondale) added 19 points for Buffalo State, and Lovell Smith (Buffalo/McKinley) was the only other Bengal scorer in double-figures with 11 points off the bench.
Buffalo State jumped out to an early seven-point lead as Brockport struggled to find its rhythm, but the Golden Eagles took the lead with five minutes remaining in the first half and never trailed again. Brockport used a late 9-0 run to take a 49-38 lead into the intermission. The Golden Eagles pushed their lead to as many as 22 in the second half before Buffalo State cut the margin to 82-70 with six minutes remaining, but Brockport responded with an 11-1 run to put the game away.
Brockport committed six turnovers in the first 10 minutes, but then settled in and took control, committing just four miscues the rest of the way. Brockport's depth was too much for the Bengals to handle, as the Golden Eagles' bench produced 42 points, compared to 23 for Buffalo State. Brockport also shot 52-percent from the field, compared to 37-percent by the Bengals.
Buffalo State will host Geneseo for its final regular season home game tomorrow at 4 p.m.
