William Paterson Men’s Basketball Cruises to 65-41 Victory against Kean

WAYNE, N.J. – Three Pioneers reached double figures in scoring as the William Paterson men's basketball team (18-5, 12-4 NJAC) used a balanced effort for a 65-41 victory against visiting Kean (12-11, 8-8 NJAC) Feb. 12.

 

Senior guard Sandy Burgos (Fort Lee, N.J./Fort Lee) had 13 points and eight boards, tying for the team rebounding lead with sophomore guard Bright Mensah (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack), who added 12 tallies. Junior guard Jaques Conceicao (Massama-Lisboa, Portugal/Francais Charle Lepierre) chipped in 13 points and five boards, and senior guard Javae King-Gilchrist (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) collected nine tallies, four steals and a game-high six steals.

 

Following a sluggish first half that saw the Pioneers stake themselves to a 30-17 lead, WP shot 52.0 (13-25) percent from the field during the final 20 minutes while limiting the Cougars to an 8-for-25 (.320) effort. Kean made just one of its 22 (.045) attempts from behind the three-point arc during the contest, and William Paterson enjoyed a 40-20 edge in points scored in the paint while seeing nine different players get into the scoring column.

 

Currently third in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) standings with two games remaining, the Pioneers have secured a top-four seed for the upcoming NJAC Tournament, and with it, a home postseason game. The third and fourth seeds will host first-round NJAC Tournament games Saturday, Feb. 22. The top two seeds will receive first-round byes and host semifinal contests Wednesday, Feb. 26.

 

Senior forward Kyle Latorre paced Kean with 13 points and 16 rebounds from off the bench.

 

William Paterson will celebrate Senior Day Saturday, Feb. 15, against Rutgers-Camden at 3:00 p.m.
