Neumann Uses Late Surge to Pull Away From Keystone, 81-67

Aston, PA – Neumann University outscored Keystone College 15-3 over the final 6:34 of Saturday afternoon's Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball game to pull away with an 81-67 victory.  The win lifts the Knights record to 15-6 on the season and 10-4 in the CSAC while the Giants fall to 9-12 overall and 6-8 in conference play.  Jesse Longmire (Harlem, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) led Keystone with 21 points on the afternoon while Duncan Lunsford (Marietta, GA/Sprayberry) moved into fifth place on Keystone's all-time scoring list after finishing with 10 points in the loss.
 
Saturday's victory salvaged a regular season series split for Neumann after the Giants won the first meeting of the season between the two teams 89-79 on December 2nd in La Plume.
 
Keystone jumped out to an 11-2 lead over the first four minutes of Saturday afternoon's contest and a three-pointer from Lunsford pushed the Giants' advantage to 18-7 with 12:34 remaining in the first half.  Neumann countered with a 10-0 run to cut their deficit to one point before Keystone built a 27-19 cushion at the 8:56 mark when Longmire scored on a layup.   Another trey by Lunsford gave Keystone a 30-21 lead with 7:42 left on the clock before the Knights used a 14-3 run to take a 35-33 lead with 1:49 to play in the first half.
 
The two teams traded the lead four times down the stretch with Neumann taking a 46-38 lead into halftime after closing the half with a 9-0 run.
 
DeShawn Lowman led all players with 12 points in the opening half while Reggie Coleman netted 10 points.  Mark Blount led all players with seven rebounds for the Knights, who shot 47.1 percent from the floor in the first half including a 4-5 effort from three-point range while hitting on 10-14 from the free throw line.
 
Longmire and Dan Candemeres (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) had nine points apiece to lead Keystone in the first half while Lunsford added eight points and a team-best four rebounds.  Alex Smith (Floyd, NY/Holland Patent ) added four assists in the period for the Giants, who connected on 48.3 percent of their field goal attempts in the opening 20 minutes of play while going 5-10 from beyond the arc and 5-6 from the stripe.
 
Neumann pushed their lead to 10 points early in the second half before Keystone put together an 8-0 spurt to narrow their deficit to 53-51 with 15:08 remaining in regulation when Candemeres connected from downtown.  The Knights would go back up by eight before Longmire scored five straight points to make it a 61-60 game in favor of the hosts with 10:42 left.  Neumann continued to hold the lead, however, and after Longmire scored on a lay-in to make it a 66-64 game with 6:34 to play, the hosts outscored the Giants 15-3 the rest of the way to pull away with the win.
 
Lowman finished with a game-high 28 points to lead Neumann while Coleman tallied 18 points.  Blount added a double-double on 14 points and a game-high 15 rebounds while Kevin Green chipped in 12 points in the win.  Coleman led all players with eight assists.  For the game, the Knights connected on 41.4 percent of their field goal attempts for the game including a 5-11 (45.5 percent) effort from downtown and a 28-37 (75.7 percent) showing at the free throw line.  Neumann also held a 44-31 advantage in rebounds for the contest.
 
Longmire's 21 points paced Keystone's offense while Candemeres finished the afternoon with 15 points.  DaVaughn Thomas (Port Arthur, TX/Silsbee) contributed 12 points and a team-leading seven rebounds while Lunsford's 10 points gave him 1,260 points for his career, fifth-most in Giants' history.  Candemeres and Smith tied for the team-lead with four assists each for Keystone, who finished the contest shooting 43.6 percent from the floor, 47.1 percent from beyond the arc, and 78.6 percent from the line.
 
The Giants will look to snap a three-game losing skid on Wednesday night when they host Baptist Bible College in a league contest scheduled to tipoff at 8:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center.  The game is part of Keystone's Think Pink Night with all proceeds going to benefit the battle against breast cancer.
