The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse shot 51.6% from the field and finished with five players scoring in double figures in defeating the Lakeland College men's basketball team 89-61 Monday night in a non-conference game at UW-L's Mitchell Hall.

The Eagles were better in almost every area and blew the game wide open with a big run late to improve to 3-0 overall. Shorthanded Lakeland was unable to capitalize on a quick start to the game and dropped to 1-1 on the season.

The Muskies scored the first seven points of the game, but UW-L responded with a 14-2 run and never trailed again. The Eagles led 43-27 at halftime and then fought off a couple brief Lakeland surges.

The Muskies got within 45-34 early in the second half after a steal and layup by James Oshkeshequoam (Sr.-Keshena, Wis.), only to see La Crosse go on another 14-2 run. Lakeland later chipped the lead back down to 14 after Kurt Jansen (Jr.-Wrightstown, Wis.) hit a three-pointer to make it 70-56 with 7:42 to play, but the Eagles finished the game on a 19-5 run.

UW-L made 33 of 64 shots from the floor, including 12 of 22 three-point tries. The Eagles also dominated the boards, out-rebounding Lakeland 42-23. And for good measure, the hosts also committed just nine turnovers, including only three in the first half.

The Muskies shot 44.2%, making 23 of 52 shots, but struggled without Justin Ward (Sr.-Wisconsin Dells, Wis.), who was not in the lineup. Lakeland finished with 16 turnovers and also allowed the Eagles to shoot 63.0% (17 of 27) in the second half.

Oshkeshequoam led the Muskies with 12 points, while Jansen added 10. Travis Kell (Fr.-Madison, Wis.) led the team with six rebounds and Jacob Servais (Fr.-Coon Valley, Wis.) added four blocks.

Calahan Skogman led UW-La Crosse with 17 points, while Luke Tweed added 16.

Lakeland returns to action Thursday night when it travels to face Silver Lake College at 7 p.m. in Manitowoc at the UW-Manitowoc Fieldhouse.
