Carthage Loses First-Place Battle at Wheaton (Ill.), 87-54, on Feb. 5

The Carthage College men's basketball team (14-7, 7-3 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) fell out of first place in the CCIW on Wednesday, Feb. 5 with an 87-54 loss to Wheaton College (Ill., 15-6, 8-2 CCIW) at King Arena in Wheaton, Ill.  The Red Men entered the game in a first-place tie with the Thunder.

Carthage fell behind, 22-11, at 13:08.  Wheaton extended its lead to 15 points, 33-18 at 7:35, and the Thunder continued to pull away.  Wheaton led by 18 points at halftime, 44-26.  The Thunder continued to roll in the second period, going up by 20 point early in the period and then extending the lead to 29 points, 62-33, at 14:02.  Wheaton made it a 30-point game, 71-41, at 8:17 and 73-43 at 6:42, en route to a 33-point decision, 87-54.

The Thunder shot a blistering 60 percent (35-58), including 70 percent in the second half (14-20) and 14-of-20 from three-point range.  The Red Men shot just 35 percent (21-60), including three-of-12 three-pointers.  Wheaton out-rebounded Carthage by a 37-29 margin,

Brayden Teuscher topped the Thunder with a game-high 28 points on 10-of-18 field goals, including six-of-nine three-pointers, along with five rebounds and four assists.  Tyler Peters scored 17 points on seven-of-nine shooting, along with six assists.  Caleb DeMoss had 13 points, and Nate Haynes added 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, including four offensive boards.  

Marlon Senior (Sr., Skokie, Ill./Niles North) was the lone Carthage player in double figures with 15 points on seven-of-13 field goals and four boards. Malcom Kelly (Sr., Kenosha, Wis./Reuther), the Red Men's leading scorer since returning to action in mid-December, was held to five points on one-for-13 shooting.

Carthage plays host to conference-opponent and No. 23 Augustana College (Ill., 15-6, 5-5 CCIW) on Saturday night, Feb. 8 in a 7 p.m. contest at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis.  The Vikings were an 84-69 loser to No. 5 Illinois Wesleyan University (17-3, 7-2 CCIW) on Wednesday in Bloomington, Ill.  Wheaton (Ill.) is sole possession of first place in the league, with Illinois Wesleyan second, Carthage third, Elmhurst College (13-7, 5-4) fourth and Augustana (Ill.) fifth.
