(BEAVER FALLS, Pa.) – Five Saints reached double-figures tonight (Wednesday, February 5, 2014) as the Thomas More College men's basketball team defeated Geneva College, 81-71, in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at the Metheny Fieldhouse in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania.
With the win, the Saints improve to 10-9 overall and 9-2 in the PAC. With the loss, the Golden Tornadoes fall to 4-16 overall and 0-11 in the PAC.
Thomas More jumped out to a 25-14 lead with 8:15 to play in the first half when senior guard D'Carlo Hayes (Louisville, Ky./Male) made a lay-up. Geneva answered with a 12-4 run to cut the lead to 29-26 on a Chaese Vaudrin three-pointer with 4:34 to play in the opening half. The Saints closed out the half on a 7-4 run to increase the lead to 36-30 at halftime when senior guard Spencer Berlekamp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) made a three-pointer.
The Saints opened the second half on a 10-0 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 46-30 when senior forward Brandon Housley (Covington, Ky./Holmes) made a lay-up with 18:08 to play in the game. Geneva answered with a 15-9 run capped by Matt Naylor's lay-up with 11:45 to play in the game to cut the lead to 54-45. Thomas More responded with a 10-4 run to increase the lead to 64-49 with 7:32 to play in the game when Berlekamp made a lay-up. The Golden Tornadoes used a 20-13 run to cut the lead to 77-69 on a Jordan Harbison lay-up with 1:04 to play in the game. That would be as close as Geneva would come as the Saints closed out the game on a 4-2 run for the 801-71 victory.
Junior guard/forward Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) led all scorers with 21 points. Joining him in double-figures was freshman guard/forward Nate McGovney (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) with 12 points, senior forward Joseph Marshall (Dayton, Ohio/Trotwood Madison) and Berlekamp each had 11 points and Housley finished with 10 points. Marshall led the team on the boards with six rebounds, while Berlekamp led the team in assists with five and Mumford led the team in steals with six.
The Saints return to action on Saturday (February 8) when they host PAC rival Washington & Jefferson College on Crestview Hills Day at the Connor Convocation Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
