SPOKANE, Wash. – A torrid shooting performance by Whitworth gave Pacific little chance to get their game going Saturday night as the Pirates shot 57.5 percent from the field to beat the Boxers 83-58 in Northwest Conference men's basketball action at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
The Pirates finished the night hitting 30 of 52 shots from the field and was dominant in nearly every part of their game. Whitworth also shot 11 of 25 from three-point, was a perfect 12 of 12 from the free throw line and out-rebounded the Boxers 35-20.
Pacific played decent basketball in countering the performance, shooting 40.8 percent from the field (20-49) and 10 of 15 from the free throw line. Daniel Zitani (Sr., Oakland, Calif.) led the Boxers with 14 points while Budweiser Hawkins (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) added 10. Mitch Wettig (Jr., Bend, Ore.) led Pacific on the boards with four rebounds.
Colton McCargar led Whitworth's attack with 17 points, connecting on 6 of 10 from the field and 3 of 6 from three-point range. Christian Jurlina and Kenny Love each scored 13 points while Dustin McConnell added 10.
With the win, Whitworth maintains their NWC lead at 15-4, 9-1 NWC. Pacific dropped to 11-8, 4-6 NWC.
The game proved close over the first 13 minutes, but Pacific found themselves unable to get any traction against the Pirates' hot hand. Pacific held an early 9-5 lead off of Coby Proctor's (Jr., Sublimity, Ore.) lay-in at the 15:39 mark, but the Pirates quickly turned the tide and went up four on Jurlina's three-pointer midway through the period.
Pacific pulled to within one, 20-19, on Riley Grandinetti's (Jr., Murray, Utah) three-pointer with 8:16 to go, but a lay-in by Jurlina on the Pirates' next possession sparked a backbreaking 26-7 run to close the half. Whitworth hit seven straight shots from the field and converted seven free throws to go up 46-26 at the half. Pacific was limited to just six first half rebounds, all on the defensive glass.
Whitworth did not let off the gas in the second half, building to a commanding 28-point lead when Love's jumper made it 64-36 with 12:40 to go. Pacific would not get closer than 22 points the rest of the way.
Pacific returns home from the eastern Washington road trip and immediately prepares for their final Tuesday night game of the season, hosting Willamette for an 8 p.m. tipoff at the Stoller Center. Live audio and video webcasts will be available at GoBoxers.com.
