Seniors Jake Davis and McPherson Moore combined for 33 points but it wasn't enough as the Emory men's basketball team came out on the short end of a home decision to the University of Chicago Friday evening.  The Eagles saw their record slip to drop to 12-5 in overall action, 4-2 in the University Athletic Association, following a 69-60 setback to the Maroons who boosted their overall slate to 11-6, 4-2 in the conference.

Davis and Moore were the Eagles' lone double-figure scorers on the evening, totaling 17 and 16 points, respectively.   The pair also tied for the team leading rebounding lead with seven boards apiece.

Emory connected on 37.1 percent of its field goal attempts (23-of-62), its second-lowest mark of the season, while Chicago finished with a 44.1 percent showing (26-of-59).  The Eagles hit just 30 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes of action, and connected on two-of-10 three-point field opportunities after sinking six in 12 attempts in the first half.   Chicago also held a 44-35 advantage in rebounding, 16-10 on the offensive end which helped the visitors to a 19-6 advantage in second-chance points.

Emory led for the majority of the opening stanza and used a 9-0 run, keyed by three pointers by junior Max Davis and sophomore Davis Rao, to take a 25-15 lead with 12:51 left in the half.   After UC crept to within three points, a bucket by sophomore Will Trawick followed by a three-pointer by Moore, one of his four on the evening, pushed Emory to a 30-22 margin with 6:18 left.   Another trey by Moore kept Emory out in front, 33-28, with 4:00 on the clock but the Maroons battled back to knot the score at 35-35 heading into halftime.

UC got the jump on Emory during the early stages of the second half as Derrick Davis accounted for seven points as part of a 12-2 burst that gave the visitors a 47-37 lead with just under 15 minutes left.  The Eagles responded by tallying 12 of the game's next 13 points, with five different players scoring in that stretch, to draw to within 49-48 with 8:48 remaining.   But that was as close as the Eagles would get with Chicago mounting an 11-2 scoring advantage, capped by a three pointer by Sam Gage, which extended its lead over Emory to 60-50 with 5:06 left.   A basket by junior Alex Foster, followed by a trey by Moore, sliced the deficit to five points but a triple by Jordan Smith boosted UC's lead back to eight points, 63-55, with 3:22 left.   A basket by Davis started a 5-0 Emory charge and the Eagles trailed by just three points with 1:51 on the clock, however the Eagles would not put anymore points up on the board, missing their final five field goal attempts, while the Maroons hit six-of-eight from the foul line in that span to seal the win.

Emory returns to action on Sunday (Feb. 2) when it plays host to No. 7-ranked Washington University in a noon tip.
