Bonney scores season-high 31 in loss at Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Senior forward Richie Bonney scored a season-high 31 points, but Clarkson University made 11 3-pointers and halted Hobart College's seven-game winning streak 77-68 in Liberty League men's basketball action this afternoon. The Statesmen slip to 14-5, 8-2 in the conference, while the Knights' improve to 10-7, 4-4.


Bonney dominated the paint, knocking down 11-of-15 from the floor, grabbing a game-high nine rebounds, and converting 9-of-14 from the foul line. Senior guard Joe Gibbonsand junior guard Connor Rehbaum both chipped in 12 points, while junior guard Trey Blanding added seven points and a team-high five assists. 

For Clarkson, John Coleman logged team-highs of 24 points and seven rebounds. Marques Charlton and Felix Abongo were a combined 5-of-9 from beyond the arc with each player recorded 15 points. Michael Hayduk added nine points off the bench on 3-of-4 3-point shooting.

Hobart shot 50 percent from the floor, but Clarkson shot 55 percent.

The Knights started to assert themselves late in the first half. After a Gibbons layup tied the game at 24 with six minutes remaining, CU went on a 12-2 run that was jump-started by back-to-back 3s from Charlton and Hayduk. Coleman gave the Knights the final basket of the half for a 41-30 lead at the break.

The Statesmen trailed throughout the second half. A traditional 3-point play by Bonney got Hobart with in four, 50-46, with about 11 minutes remaining, but Clarkson countered with a 10-3 run that pushed the lead back into double figures to quell the threat. The Statesmen never got closer than seven the rest of the way.

Hobart will wrap up its four-game road trip at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4, when the Statesmen visit RIT.
