Simon Scores 16 to Help R-MC Outlast Hampden-Sydney

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Senior Andre Simon (Newport News, Va./Menchville) tallied 16 points as Randolph-Macon defeated Hampden-Sydney 69-60 Wednesday evening in ODAC action at Fleet Gymnasium.

The Yellow Jackets (14-4, 8-1 ODAC) have won 10 straight and 13 of its past 14 contests.

Junior Connor Sullivan (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) put up 14 points, while junior Joe Hassell (Portsmouth, Va./Indian River) added 13.

R-MC held a 10-point lead (31-21) at halftime before the Tigers (10-8, 4-5) scored the first four points of the second half to cut the lead to six. The Yellow Jackets maintained the lead throughout the second half, but it never again reached double figures. H-SC narrowed the margin to five with 10:30 remaining before a three-point play by Simon stretched the lead back to eight. The Tigers cut it to three at 58-55 with 4:40 left before Hassell sank a pair of free throws to make it 60-55. Hassell scored six straight points for the Yellow Jackets as the visitors led 64-57 with two minutes left. R-MC hit 9 of 10 free throws in the final 4:30 to secure the 69-60 victory.

The Yellow Jackets hit 24 of 33 free throws (.727) in the game, while the Tigers were just 12 of 17 (.706).

Senior Marcus Badger (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) scored on a layup 2:16 into the contest to give R-MC its first lead at 9-7. Simon hit a pair of free throws and converted a three-point play on consecutive trips down the floor to put the Yellow Jackets ahead 23-15 with just over seven minutes remaining in the half. Sullivan hit a three-pointer with four seconds to go in the period to give R-MC its largest lead at 31-21 heading to intermission. Simon led all scorers with nine points in the first half.

R-MC returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 1, in a 4 p.m. contest against ODAC co-leader Guilford at Crenshaw Gymnasium.
