Giants Rally Late to Defeat Highlanders, 80-76

Langhorne, PA – Trailing by four points with 1:35 remaining in regulation in Wednesday night's Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball game at Cairn University, Keystone College's scored the contest's final eight points to notch an 80-76 victory over the Highlanders.  The Giants level their overall record at 9-9 on the season while improving to 6-5 in league play while Cairn drops to 1-17 on the year and 1-10 in the conference after having their upset bid dashed by Keystone's late rally.
 
Keystone, who completed a regular season sweep of the Highlanders with Wednesday night's comeback win, scored the first eight points of the game and led 11-6 at the 15:29 mark before Cairn used an 8-0 run of their own to build a 14-11 advantage with 13:33 remaining in the first half.  Deion Monroe (Kingston, NY/Kingston ) tied the game with a three pointer before the Highlanders were able to claim a 24-19 advantage midway through the period.  The Giants cut their deficit to 29-28 with just over four minutes remaining in the half when Dan Candemeres (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) connected from downtown, but Cairn outscored the visitors 7-2 the rest of the half to take a 36-30 lead into the intermission.
 
Cairn scored the first five points of the second half to extend their advantage to 41-30 and would lead by as many as 13 points midway through the period at 55-42.  Trailing 57-45 with 9:03 remaining in regulation, DaVaughn Thomas (Port Arthur, TX/Silsbee) connected on a pair of free throws to ignite a 13-4 burst by Keystone that saw the Giants draw to within three points, 61-58, with just under seven minutes to play when Candemeres hit on another three pointer.  After the Highlanders scored back-to-back field goals, Duncan Lunsford (Marietta, GA/Sprayberry) scored four straight points to make it a 65-62 game in favor of Cairn.
 
The Highlanders were able to extend their lead to eight points, 73-65 with 3:43 left on the clock before Keystone rattled off seven straight points to make it a one-point game at the 2:12 mark when Monroe connected from downtown.  An old-fashion three-point play pushed the hosts lead to 76-72 with 1:47 remaining before Lunsford countered with a traditional three pointer followed by a layup to give Keystone a 77-76 lead with 43 seconds left.  Cairn missed on a potential go-ahead three pointer with 17 ticks remaining and Lunsford grabbed the rebound and was fouled before going 1-2 from the free throw line.  Miles Dargan (Orlando, FL/Wekiva) grabbed the rebound off of Lunsford's second shot that missed and made both shots from the line after being fouled to give the Giants a four-point lead that would stand as the final. 
 
Lunsford led all players with 22 points on the night to go along with five rebounds while Thomas finished with 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds for Keystone.  Monroe netted 12 points while Rashaud Kelley (Farrell, PA/Paul Laurence Dunbar) contributed 10 points and five points in the win.  Dargan paced the Giants with three assists while Candemeres and Jesse Longmire (Harlem, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) picked up four steals apiece.
 
For the game, Keystone shot 41.8 percent from the field including a 13-35 (37.1 percent) effort from beyond the arc and an 11-18 (61.1 percent) night from the line.
 
JD Zamroz paced Cairn's offense with 20 points while Omar Askia netted 16 points.  Reuben Lacy added a double-double on 15 points and a game-high 15 rebounds for the Highlanders, who hit on 48.3 percent of their attempts from the floor in the loss while gong 5-18 (27.8 percent) from three-point range and 13-16 (81.3 percent) from the charity stripe. 
 
Keystone will visit Immaculata University on Saturday for a CSAC contest scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. in Immaculata, PA.  The Giants will be looking to avenge and 80-67 loss to the Mighty Macs suffered on January 20th in La Plume.
