Clarks Summit, PA – Duncan Lunsford (Marietta, GA/Sprayberry) and Miles Dargan (Orlando, FL/Wekiva) combined to scored 57 points to lead Keystone College to a 98-82 victory at Baptist Bible College in Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball action on Monday evening. Both players set season-highs with Lunsford netting 37 points and Dargan scoring 20 points to help the Giants improve to 8-9 on the season while leveling their conference record at 5-5.
Keystone raced out to a 23-5 lead over the first 6:10 of Monday night's game before Baptist Bible (6-11, 3-7 CSAC) cut the Giants' lead to seven points, 35-28, with 6:54 remaining in the opening half. The visitors pushed their advantage to 51-37 with 2:19 left on the clock when Lunsford scored on a layup before Abe Valentine hit back-to-back three pointers for the Defenders to narrow their deficit to eight points. Lunsford hit a pair of free throws with 46 seconds to play to give Keystone a 53-43 lead heading into halftime.
Lunsford scored 21 points in the first half to lead the Giants while shooting 8-10 from the floor while tying with Dan Candemeres (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) for the team-lead with four rebounds. Dargan added 16 points in the opening stanza after shooting a hot, 5-7 from three-point range and Candemeres also chipped in eight points. As a team, Keystone connected on 50 percent of their shots from the field while going 9-20 from beyond the arc in the stanza.
Valentine led Baptist Bible with 21 first half points while Dan Decker contributed eight points for the Defenders, who also shot 50 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play while going 7-14 from beyond the arc.
The two teams traded baskets early in the second half before DaVaughn Thomas (Port Arthur, TX/Silsbee) completed an old-fashioned three-point play and Jesse Longmire (Harlem, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) followed by hitting on a pair of free throws to give Keystone a 69-54 advantage with 14:41 remaining in regulation. Baptist Bible scored the game's next six points to make it a nine-point contest but the Giants were able to stretch their lead to 81-67 with 7:46 left on the clock. Keystone then put the game out of reach by swelling their advantage to 96-75 with 3:21 showing on the clock.
Lunsford led all players with 37 points on the evening on 13-17 shooting from the floor including a 3-6 effort from three-point land and an 8-13 night at the free throw line. The junior forward also led Keystone with eight rebounds. Dargan ended the night with 20 points after going 6-10 from beyond the arc and 2-3 from the stripe. Candemeres was the third Giants' player in double-figures with 18 points while Thomas dished out a game-high five assists in the win. For the game, Keystone shot 50 percent from the field while going 14-32 (43.8 percent) from downtown and 18-27 (66.7 percent) from the line.
Valentine finished with a team-high 22 points for Baptist Bible as Keystone limited the dangerous scorer to just one point in the second half. Luke Peterson added 20 points while Dan Dodd and George Wion tied for the team-lead with seven boards apiece. The Defenders connected on 45.9 percent of their field goal attempts on the evening while shooting 45.8 percent from beyond the arc and 68.2 percent from the free throw line.
Keystone will be back in action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Cairn University for a CSAC contest scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m. in Langhorne, PA.
