UW-La Crosse Falls to Top-Ranked UW-Stevens Point

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team fell 91-72 to No. 1-ranked UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon in Mitchell Hall.  The Eagles drop to 11-7 overall and 5-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Pointers improve to 18-0 overall and 9-0 in the conference.  UW-Stevens Point, ranked first on this week's D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, earned its seventh win in the last eight meetings with UW-L. 

The first half featured 11 ties and seven lead changes.  UW-L lead by as many as four in the first half at 18-14 with 10:18 remaining after a Braden Tice three-point field goal.   The game was tied 32-32 with 2:22 left when UW-Stevens Point scored the final five points of the half on a Stephen Pelkofer jumper and a three-point play from Trevor Hass.  

UW-L trailed 45-41 with 16:36 remaining in the game when UW-Stevens Point went on a 8-2 run to lead 53-43 with 13:28 left.   The Eagles trailed 58-47 with 11:21 left when they scored seven straight points to cut the deficit to 58-54 with 10:17 remaining after a Tice three-pointer.  

UW-Stevens Point led 63-58 with 8:32 remaining when it went on a 21-6 run to lead 84-64 with 2:54 left.  Hass scored 11 of the Pointers' 21 points in the run, including going three-of-four from three-point range.  He scored 14 consecutive points for UW-Stevens Point from 11:21 to 7:43. 

UW-L shot 50.8% from the field, including 31.8% (seven-of-22) from three-point range, and 50.0% (five-of-10) at the free throw line.  The Eagles shot 53.3% (16-of-30) from the field in the second half. 

Calahan Skogman led the Eagles with 18 points, six rebounds and five assists while Connor De Bruin finished with a career-high 16 points in his first career start.  De Bruin was seven-of-nine from the field and two-of-two at the line.  Lucas Collom finished with 13 points Saturday while Tice had 12 points and five rebounds. 

UW-Stevens Point shot 54.4% from the field, including 54.2% (13-of-24) from three-point range, and 88.9% (16-of-18) at the free throw line.  The Pointers shot 71.4% (20-of-28) from the field in the second half, including 76.9% (10-of-13) from three-point range. 

Hass scored a school record 45 points for the Pointers, going 13-of-17 from the field, including nine-of-13 from three-point range.  The nine three-point field goals made tied a school record.  Hass was also 10-of-10 at the line.  Tyler Tillema finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and three blocks for UW-Stevens Point Saturday.

UW-L returns to action Wednesday, January 29 hosting UW-Oshkosh at 7 p.m.
