La Plume, PA – Freshman guard Jesse Longmire (Harlem, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) scored a season-high 27 points and led all players with six assists to lead Keystone College to an 89-69 victory at Marywood University on Wednesday night in Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball action. The Giants improve to 7-8 on the season while snapping a brief, two-game losing skid while leveling their conference at record at 4-4.
Marywood (5-11, 1-8 CSAC) jumped out to an early, 9-2 lead in Wednesday night's contest before Keystone used a 14-6 run to claim a 16-15 advantage after Longmire completed a rare, four-point play by converting his free throw after being fouled on a made three-pointer. The two teams then traded the lead three times before the Pacers built a 28-20 lead with 9:14 remaining in the opening half.
Marywood stretched their lead to nine points before Keystone went on a 10-0 run that included a pair of treys from Dan Candemeres (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) to claim a 32-31 lead at the 4:24 mark after Duncan Lunsford (Marietta, GA/Sprayberry) hit the front end of a pair of free throws. A field goal put the hosts back on top briefly before Candemeres drained another trey to ignite an 8-2 burst by the Giants that gave the visitors a 40-35 halftime lead.
Longmire led Keystone with 18 points in the first half after shooting 7-9 from the field while going 3-3 from the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes of play. Candemeres added 12 points in the opening 20 minutes of play while DaVaughn Thomas (Port Arthur, TX/Silsbee) hauled in five rebounds to lead the Giants, who out-rebounded Marywood by an 18-12 margin in the half. Keystone shot 48.4 percent from the field in the stanza while going 6-15 from three-point range and 4-5 from the free throw line.
Ryan Corrigan paced Marywood's offense with 11 points in the first period while Matt Tintle netted 10 points for the Pacers, who connected on 55.6 percent of their field goal attempts in the period while going 4-8 from downtown and 1-2 from the stripe.
When play resumed in the second half, Keystone built on their lead, stretching their advantage to 64-49 with 13:11 remaining on a three-pointer from Lunsford. Marywood narrowed their deficit to 11 points before Lunsford connected on back-to-back treys to give the visitors a 70-53 cushion with 10:58 remaining in regulation. The Giants would stretch their lead to as many as 18 points with just over seven minutes left in the game before the visitors' lead swelled to 20 points at 83-63 at the 3:59 mark when Candemeres hit on a pair of free throws. The Pacers trimmed their deficit to as few at 15 points before cruised in the end to the 20-point victory.
Longmire paced Keystone's offense with a season-high 27 points to go along with six assists. Candemeres finished the evening with 21 points for the second-straight game while Lunsford netted 20 points while tying with Thomas for a team-high with six rebounds. The Giants shot 52.5 percent from the field for the game including shooting at a 44.4 percent clip from three-point range while going a solid, 15-16 (93.8 percent) from the free throw line. The Giants also held a 34-26 advantage in rebounds for the game.
Corrigan led the Pacers with 18 points on the evening while Tintle and Shane Kellaher netted 13 points apiece in the loss. Shane Letthand chipped in 11 points for Marywood, who connected on 48.2 percent of their field goal attempts on the evening while going 6-19 from beyond the arc and 9-11 from the charity stripe. Kellaher and Tintle tied for the team-lead with five rebounds apiece while Daniel Tintle dished out five assists to lead the hosts.
Keystone will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Cabrini College, who is currently ranked third in the nation, in a rematch of last season's CSAC Final. Opening tip between the Giants and Cavaliers is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center in La Plume.
