NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – A week after notching a historic win over SUNY Oswego at Max Ziel Gymnasium, the State University of New York at New Paltz men's basketball team was done in by 25.7 percent (9-of-35) shooting from the floor in the second half in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) rematch Tuesday night at the Hawk Center, losing by a 64-52 final to Oswego.

As has been customary of the Hawks this year, New Paltz leaped out to a strong start, scoring the contest's first seven points. After Oswego regrouped with a 30-second timeout, the Lakers went on a 10-0 tear to seize the lead. Oswego mounted a seven-point edge with 10:50 to go in the first half, making it seem as though the Lakers would pull ahead big early.

A New Paltz 12-0 run, however, turned the tables toward the home team, and junior guard/forward Taylor Sowah(Bronx, N.Y./Miller Place) made the score 21-15 in favor of the Hawks with 5:58 to go before halftime. New Paltz led by as many as eight points down the stretch in the first stanza, but an 11-0 Oswego tear to end the period resulted in a 29-26 halftime lead for the Lakers.

That Oswego run bled into the second half, as New Paltz's first points of the period came with 14:53 left to play in regulation. All told, the Hawks went 10:37 minutes total without scoring, and that drought ultimately dug New Paltz a hole it could not climb out of. Down by as many as 18 points—ironically, the Hawks' largest lead in their win over the Lakers last week—New Paltz put up a fight late in the game, going on a 9-0 spurt to pull within nine after a three-pointer by graduate student guard Nick Taldi (Merrick, N.Y./Bellmore JFK). The Hawks were unable to cut into the deficit further, and they settled with a 12-point defeat.

New Paltz drops to 6-9 overall and 3-5 in the SUNYAC. The Hawks finish out their five-game home stand this weekend, hosting SUNY Geneseo on Friday, Jan. 24, at 8 p.m. and The College at Brockport on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 4 p.m. Oswego rises to 11-5 overall and 5-4 in SUNYAC competition. The Lakers continue their four-game road swing on Tuesday, Jan. 28, against Geneseo at 8 p.m.

The Hawks shot just 39.3 percent (20-of-63) from the floor for the contest, and they were just 18.8 percent (3-of-16) from long range. Oswego relied solely on an interior game, shooting just three treys all night and finishing 0-of-3 from distance. New Paltz received some favorable bounces on rebounds, gaining 11 team boards en route to trailing by just two (38-36) in rebounding.

Sowah led the Hawks in scoring with a team-high 16 points, while sophomore forward Alex Perlman (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) and Taldi added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Perlman netted his points in 21 minutes coming off the bench, and he also tallied a team-high three blocks. Sowah paced New Paltz in the rebounding department with six boards, while sophomore guard Keegan Donovan (Groton, N.Y./Groton) dished out five assists.

Oswego received a virtuoso performance from freshman guard/forward Keith Tyson, who came off the bench to record game-highs in points (19) and blocks (5). Senior guard/forward Daniel Ross, sophomore center Mark Candelario and junior forward Rashawn Powell all scored 10 points, while Powell grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds, 15 of which came in the second half.
