Castleton Takes Care of NEC 100-82

Henniker, N.H. – Four different players scored in double figures for the Spartans as they took control in the second half to finish with a 100-82 victory over New England College on Tuesday evening in North Atlantic Conference action. 

Castleton shot just 42.7 percent from the floor and 28.0 percent from downtown but committed a season-low 13 turnovers as the team improved to 9-5 overall and 7-1 in the NAC. The Pilgrims made 43.8 percent of their shots and outrebounded the Spartans 54-47 but were forced in 26 turnovers as they fell to 6-10 and 3-6 in conference play. 

Chad Copeland led a balanced scoring attack with 18 points and five rebounds while Carnelius Greenadded 15 points and Logan White had 14. Troy Davine was strong in 18 minutes off the bench with 13 points, and five rebounds. Steve Rosemond grabbed a team-high ten boards and added eight points and two steals. 

Green's 15 points on the evening give him exactly 1000 for his career. The junior scored 817 points in two seasons at Green Mountain and this year has 183 points, averaging 13.1 points per game for the Spartans. 

Robin Wilson led the NEC offense with 16 points, nine rebounds and two steals while Johnathan Byrnes chipped in with 12 points, six rebounds and six steals before fouling out. Dezron Wilson was also in double figures with 13 points and five rebounds. 

The two teams battled closely through the majority of the first half before Castleton used a 7-0 run to go up 34-25 with just over five minutes remaining on the clock.  The Pilgrims responded, cutting the lead to 41-39 with 1:54 on the clock but the Spartans closed out the half with a 6-2 spurt in the final minute of the first for the 45-41 lead.  

The Spartans built up a quick 10-point lead and never trailed again. The Pilgrims cut the deficit to six points at the 12-minute mark, but Green drilled back-to-back shots from downtown and Chad Pulverand Copeland each hit layups to extend the lead to 16 points. NEC didn't get closer that 14 the rest of the way as the Spartans finished with the 18-point win. 

Ackley dished off a team-high five assists and recorded two steals while Jonathan Mitchell scored seven points and handed off three assists in his first action of the year.

The Spartans return to action on Friday when they host Maine-Farmington at 5:30 pm.
