Brandon Caruthers Lead Brockport to Victory over Cortland

Senior Brandon Caruthers (Rochester, NY/East) scored 23 points to help The College at Brockport men's basketball team to its tenth straight victory as the Golden Eagles won 77-65 at Cortland in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup on Saturday evening.

Cortland (9-6, 4-4 SUNYAC) opened up scoring for the game with two free throws. Olusola Adeniran (Elmont, NY/Sewanhaka) answered back with a layup to tie things up. Adeniran hit another shot for the Golden Eagles to give them the lead that they would hang on to for the remainder of the game. Caruthers followed up with a layup and a three pointer to put Brockport (11-1, 5-0 SUNYAC) up by seven points.

The Red Dragons pulled to within three points at 13:24, but would not get any closer to the Golden Eagles for the rest of the game. Mike Gallagher (Schenectady, NY/Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) hit a big jump shot to put Brockport back up by five and give them the momentum back.

Two free throws from Caruthers with 3:52 left to play put Brockport up by 14 points, its largest lead of the game.

A layup by Cortland in the last 17 seconds pulled them to within 10 points heading into halftime.

John Ivy (Rochester, NY/East), who sat for most of the first half due to foul trouble, got things going for Brockport in the second half with a three pointer at 19:04. A layup from Caruthers a minute later pushed the Golden Eagles lead out to 15.

Ivy gave Brockport their largest lead of the game, 21 points, with a layup at 12:46.

Cortland slowly tried to chip away at the Golden Eagle lead as the clock ran down. The Red Dragons cut Brockport's lead to 11, but there were only 29 seconds left to play.

Patrick Coyle (North Chili, NY/Bishop Kearney) capped off scoring for the Golden Eagles with a free throw in the last 22 seconds.

As a team, the Golden Eagles shot 47.2% (25-53) from the floor, 37.5% from long range and 77.8% (21-27) from the free throw line.

Caruthers led the way with 23 points, while also recording five assists and four steals. With limited minutes, Ivy scored 11 points, while Coyle chipped in nine. Adeniran grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
