CASTINE, Maine -- New England College received double-digits scorers by four players to knock off Maine Maritime 79-63 in a North Atlantic Conference men's basketball game Friday. The Pilgrims improved to 6-8 overall, 3-4 NAC, while the Mariners dropped to 1-11, 0-6.
Jonathan Byrnes led all scorers with 20 points for NEC, Ryan Schmitz added 14 and Joel DeMadet and Robin Wilson each scored 12. Willson added a game-best 13 rebounds.
Garrett Libby paced Maine Maritime with 14 points and Brad Reed added 12. Jason Hatch grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for the Mariners.
NEC led by nine, 13-4, early in the contest after a free throw by Wilson. Libby's three at 15:29 made it a six-point game before the Pilgrims went on a 14-4 run to lead 26-13 with 8:25 left in the game. Six different players scored for NEC in the run.
The Mariners answered with a 12-5 run to close the gap to 31-25 with 3:37 left in the game. Shep Carter netted six in the run, while David Breunig, Tyler Chiasson and Kyle Boucher each scored two points for MMA. Wilson's layup with eight seconds left gave the Pilgrims a 35-25 lead at the break.
Libby's three early in the second half put the Mariners within 11, 39-28, but that was as close as they would get the remainder of the game. Wilson's layup at 15:40 gave the Pilgrim's their largest lead, 50-31. After a Byrnes layup for NEC at 13:07 made it 56-37, the Mariners used a 17-10 run to get within 12, 66-54, with 4:51 left in the game.
NEC went on a 12-4 scoring run to lead 78-58 with under a minute left in the game en route to their win.
The Mariners return to action Saturday hosting Colby-Sawyer at 1 p.m.
