POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—Senior Richie Bonney posted his 12th double-double of the season, leading Hobart College to a 63-61 Liberty League win at Vassar College. The Statesmen improved to 9-4 overall, 3-1 in the conference, while the Brewers slip to 9-3, 1-2.

Bonney moved into a tie for the national lead in double-doubles with a team-high 18 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. He shook off a slow start that saw him record just four points and four boards in the first half, making six of the 11 shots he took in the second half. Junior Connor Rehbaum also had a big second half, scoring 12 of his 17 points after the break. Senior Joe Gibbons gave the Statesmen three players in double digits with 11 points.

Johnny Mrlik was the only Brewer in double figures, scoring a game-high 24 points.

Vassar outshot Hobart from the floor (45%-42%), from behind the arc (44%-30%), and at the line (71%-68%), but the Statesmen earned more trips to the foul line (19-14), grabbed more boards (34-29) and made fewer turnovers (6-8).

The Brewers controlled the first half, leading for most of the session. A layup by Alex Snyder (5 pts, 7 rebs) with 3:09 left in the first half, staked Vassar to its largest lead of the game, 32-23. Hobart closed the half on a 6-2 run to go into the break down five.

The Statesmen kept the momentum early in the second half, using a 13-4 run to take a 42-38 lead on an Andrew Hoy 3-pointer. Hobart never led by more than five down the stretch, but the Statesmen never relinquished their lead.

With 11 seconds left, junior Trey Blanding (6 pts) made 1-of-2 free throws to put Hobart up 61-58. Vassar advanced the ball across midcourt and called timeout. The Brewers got the ball into Mrlik who fired up a wild 3 from in front of his own bench. First-year Pete Drescher secured the rebound and was fouled. He made both of his freebies to make it a two possession game. Mrlik sank an uncontested 3 at the buzzer to close out the scoring.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 18, when they visit Bard College (5-6, 0-2). Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
