MARIETTA, Ohio – Junior Andy Dollman poured in a career-high 24 points off the bench to lead No. 19-ranked Marietta College to a 97-86 win over Baldwin Wallace University Saturday (Jan. 11) afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 10-3 overall and 5-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Yellow Jackets drop to 7-6 on the season and 3-3 in the OAC.
The teams traded baskets in the early going, but the Pioneers used a 12-4 run to take a nine-point lead, 25-16, with 11:45 left in the half. Baldwin Wallace battled back and grabbed the lead, 42-41, on a three-pointer from Kyle Payne at the 4:17 mark.
Marietta outscored the Yellow Jackets 12-7 in the final minutes of the first half to take a 53-49 lead into the break. Dollman scored on a driving layup as time expired in the opening period.
The Pioneers extended the lead to double digits, 73-62, on a three-pointer from A.J. Ireland early in the second period. Baldwin Wallace managed to cut the margin to seven points but couldn't get any closer.
Marietta's balanced attack wore down the Yellow Jackets in the second half. BW's starting five averaged over 29 minutes played and accounted for 80 of the Yellow Jackets' 86 points in the game. Baldwin Wallace shot just 30% from the floor, including 1-of-13 from behind the arc, in the second half. They also struggled at the line the second half hitting 16-of-28 free throws.
Dollman hit his first eight shots from the floor and was 7-of-8 at the free throw line. He also had three rebounds and a pair of assists to go along with his 24 points. Sophomore Luis Garcia scored a career-high 22 points and was 13-of-13 at the free throw line, one short of the school record 14-of-14 performance by Sam Hirt in 1961-62.
Junior Garrett Stephenson was also in double figures with 16 points. Junior Andy Stegman pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
BW junior point guard Jaron Crowe led all scorers with 29 points. Seniors Kevin Krakowiak and Kyle Payne scored 23 and 22 points, respectively.
Marietta edged the Yellow Jackets on the glass, 39-38. The Pioneers forced 11 BW turnovers, while committing just nine.
For the game, Marietta shot 53.3% (32-of-60) from the floor, 27.8% (5-of-18) from three-point range and 82.4% (28-of-34) at the free throw line. Baldwin Wallace was 27-of-63 (42.9%) from the floor, 7-of-27 (25.9%) behind the arc and 25-of-41 (61.0%) at the line.
Marietta travels to the University of Mount Union on Wednesday (Jan. 15) for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
