Montclair St. Races Past Rutgers-Camden for Third Straight Win, 87-58

Montclair, NJ – Sophomore guard Angel Gonzalez (Ocala, FL, Meadowbrook Academy) scored 17 of his 23 points during a huge run bridging the first and second halves as Montclair State captured its third straight game knocking off Rutgers-Camden, 87-58 at the Panzer Athletic Center on Saturday.

Senior guard Daniel Singleton (Neptune, NJ, Neptune) had a career-best 26 points as the Red Hawks improved to 5-6 overall, 2-3 in the NJAC with their 20th victory over the Scarlet Raptors in the last 22 meetings. MSU leads the all-time series 45-9.

Junior Alex Smart (Sicklerville, NJ / Timber Creek) had 18 points and eight rebounds for Rutgers-Camden, which dropped its second straight contest.

The Red Hawks grabbed an early 5-2 lead however a 15-0 run by the Scarlet Raptors over a 10-minute span helped Rutgers-Camden gain a 17-5 lead as Tom Heim (Mullica Hill, NJ / Clearview Regional) scored on a layup with 10:29 to go. Two free throws from Marcus Taylor (Somerdale, NJ / Sterling) made the score 28-20 with 3:43 to play in the first half before MSU embarked on its decisive run.

Ordel Goldson (Hackettstown, NJ, Warren Hills) began the run with a short jumper in the paint and Singleton added back-to-back layups before Gonzalez drained a three with 1:17 to play putting the Red Hawks up 29-28. Singleton had another layup for an 11-point run with Taylor hitting just before the halftime buzzer as MSU led 31-30 at the break.

Gonzalez opened the second period with two foul shots and later hit from behind the arc to boost the lead to 38-32. He later added another three-pointer and then made three free throws after being fouled which gave Montclair State a 46-37 lead with 13:54 to go. Singleton, who had 14 points in the run, added a layup and Gonzalez hit another three widening the MSU lead to 54-39 with 11:07 left. Chris Torres (Oakland, NJ, Indian Hills) got in on the run with a layup and Singleton finished it off a three-point play as the Red Hawks led 59-39 with 8:45 remaining.

Singleton finished 11-of-17 from field and added five rebounds and two assists with Gonzalez added four rebounds and two assists on 6-of-12 shooting, 5-of-10 from behind the arc. Goldson added another double-double, his fifth of the season and third straight, with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Michael Spence (Irvington, NJ, Manchester Regional) grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds as MSU out-boarded the Scarlet Raptors, 48-33, including 19 on the offensive glass.

Taylor had 14 points, seven assists and three rebounds for Rutgers-Camden, which shot 10-of-32 from the floor over the final 20 minutes and 37 percent (21-of-56) for the game. Smart and Jason Richardson (Cedarbrook, NJ / Winslow Township) each had eight rebounds.

Both teams return to action with NJAC contests. Montclair State is in Jersey City, NJ on Wednesday, January 8 to face New Jersey City University at 8:00 pm. Rutgers-Camden hosts Rutgers-Newark at home on Monday, January 6 at 3:00 pm.
