Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball dropped its ninth straight contest on Saturday afternoon following a tough 65-58 loss to visiting Mount Saint Mary. Senior Gerard Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) was one of two players in double-figures for the Dolphins and posted his second career double-double.
After a sluggish start from both sides, the Dolphins jumped in front 11-8 with 12:09 left in the opening stanza on a Brandon Serrano (Hempstead, N.Y.) conversion. The lead would be the last for the Mount in the game after Mount Saint Mary went on a 17-5 run covering 5:42 to pull in front 25-16. The Knights went 5-for-7 from the floor over the stretch and got 10 points from Donte Howell.
Trailing by nine points with 6:27 left in the first half, the Mount got even with the Knights with a 7-0 run capped by a Serrano jumper with 11 seconds left to knot the score at 28-28. The game would remain tied until the final second of the period when Anthony Cipriano drilled a three-pointer to give the Knights a 31-28 halftime advantage.
Both team struggled from the floor overall in the first half, but the visitors knocked in seven three-point field goals to gain the advantage at the half. Howell and Cipriano each recorded a pair of triples in the half, with Howell leading the Knights with 12 points. Serrano led all players in the period with 14 points for the Dolphins.
Mount Saint Mary built its largest lead of the game when Alex Smith finished off a 9-2 spurt to open the second half with a bucket to move the Knights in front 40-30. Mount Saint Mary would match its largest lead of the day on a Joe Stabach conversion at the 15:03 mark on a lay-in.
The Dolphins would battle back with the next nine points to pull to within one on a Serrano jumper with 11:45 left in regulation, but a Stabach triple at 11:25 gave the Knights back a four points advantage.
The Dolphins would not let the Knights gain an advantage of larger than six points until the final minute and fought to within one on an Antonio Johnson (Fort Johnson, N.Y.) three-pointer with 4:37 left in regulation. Mount Saint Vincent would convert just one field goal the rest of the way, as the visiting Knights closed the game with nine of the final 12 points to secure their third league win of the season.
The Knights finished the game shooting 34.6-percent overall, but knocked in nine three-point field goals on the day. Joe Henain led the scoring effort with 13 points to go along with nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Howell closed a strong game with 12 points, five assists and five rebounds and Stabach rounded out a trio in double-figures with 11 points and a pair of steals.
Serrano wrapped up the game shooting 8-for-15 from the floor to lead all scorers with 22 points to go along with nine rebounds. Dante Gray (Monroe, N.Y.) led the team with four assists.
Fraser finished off a strong effort with 13 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for the Dolphins. He went 5-for-11 from the floor on the day and also blocked a career best three shots.
The Dolphins shot an even 40-percent from the field on the day, the first time they have reached 40-percent since the third game of the season, but went 5-for-15 from distance and 9-for-14 from the free-throw line. The Dolphins also committed 21 turnovers in the game, leading to a 21-8 Mount Saint Mary edge in points off of miscues.
Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 1-9 overall on the season and to 0-4 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will look to snap their nine game skid on Monday when they welcome Sage to the Peter Jay Sharp Center. Tip-off with the Gators is set for 7:00 p.m.
