Big second half lifts men's basketball to win over Clippers

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Patrick Stewart (Bangor, Maine) had a game-high 20 points and Chris Hudnut (Chevy Chase, Md.) finished with a nice all-around game as the Colby College men's basketball team scored 52 points in the second half on the way to a 92-61 non-conference win over University of Maine at Machias on Saturday.

Stewart was 6-for-9 from the field, 3-for-6 from 3-point range, and 5-for-5 from the foul line. Hudnut finished with 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting, had a game-high seven rebounds, and dished five assists. 

Sam Willson (Watertown, Conn.) was 8-for-9 from the foul line on the way to 14 points for Colby (6-3 overall). Connor O'Neil (Freeport, Maine) had eight of his 10 points in the second half and shot 4-for-5 from the field and made both of his 3-point shots. Shane Rogers (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) was 4-for-5 from the field for eight points, while point guard Luke Westman (Newton, Mass.) had eight points, five assists, and five rebounds.
The Mules shot 52.3 percent (34-for-65) from the field and hit 17 of their 18 free throws. 
Maine-Machias shot 50 percent from the field in the first half and only trailed 40-34 at the break. After Colby opened up a 25-9 lead after 10 minutes of play, the Clippers chipped away at the lead and cut the margin to 35-33 on a 3-point shot by Aaron Van Buren (Bradenton, Fla.) with 3:46 to play. Van Buren then made 1-of-2 from the foul line with 3:14 to play to cut the margin to one at 35-34. Willson scored the final five points of the half for Colby.
With the score 51-40, the Mules went on a 21-4 run over the next five minutes to take a 72-44 lead with 11:58 remaining. The Mules had their biggest lead at 35 points with 4:34 to play.
Elias Gutierrez (Sarasota, Fla.) shot 6-for-11 from the field and finished with a team-high 19 points for Maine-Machias (7-5 overall). Floyd Higgins (Orlando, Fla.) had 13 points, Van Buren finished with 11, and point guard AC Ford (Glendale, Ariz.) had seven assists.
