MADISON, N.J. (December 9, 2013) – The 65th meeting between the FDU-Florham and Drew University men's basketball teams went in favor of the Devils as they pulled away 87-70 in Baldwin Gym this evening. FDU improves to 5-4 while the Rangers drop to 3-4 on the season.
With the victory the Devils add to their all-time series lead and are now 39-26 against Drew in a rivalry that dates back to 1974. FDU has now won six of the last eight meetings with the last Drew win coming in 2010 in overtime.
Four of the five Devil starters were in double figures including John Flete who poured in a game-high 25 points. Senior Will Green had a monster game on the boards collecting 15 rebounds to go along with 16 points. FDU's Andrew Stess chipped in 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting to pace the Devils attack.
For the Rangers, sophomore Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Prep) scored 16 points and tied a career-high with eight rebounds. That would prove to be the final lead of the night for the Rangers as FDU took a 41-32 edge into the halftime break.
The Rangers seemed to catch the momentum after a fast-break dunk by Kevin-Michael Miller (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) cutting the FDU down to seven in the early minutes of the second half. Instead the momentum was quickly captured by the Devils as the rattled off the next seven points and did not allow the Rangers to get any closer in for the remainder of the game.
Each time it seemed the Rangers were poised for a run, FDU came back with a big run of their own. Drew senior Jason Chornyei (Westerly, R.I./Cheshire Academy) came up with an old-fashioned three-point play to cut the Ranger deficit to 10 with 9:17 to play. The Devils came back with the knock-out blow, ripping off a 14-4 run over the next 5:25. The Devils took their largest lead of 22 on a pair of free throws be Flete with 4:03 remaining in the game.
