ALTOONA, Pa - Balanced scoring guided the Hilbert men's basketball team to their 87-72 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory over Penn State Altoona December 7.
Jerame Owens displayed his athletic abilities once again, earning his third consecutive double-double spotting the Hawks at 1-1 in league standings while dropping the Lions to 0-2. Evan Greening matched Owens in the paint, picking up a 20-point, 15-rebound clip before fouling out late in the game.
Owens finished with 20 points and pulled in 11 rebounds but added 4 blocks on defense. Trevor Stark chipped in 17 points and 5 assists off the bench while Xavier Major gave the Hawks 12 points just two more than Nick Nadeau who added two blocks. CJ Hodge finished with 9 rebounds, 7 assist, 3 steals and was 4-of-7 from the floor padding the stat sheet with 9 points.
Hilbert held a lead from the first tip until 13:33 when Ross Jonathan hit a jumper to give the Lions a 10-9 score. The Hawks jumped back in the driver's seat for four minutes until Ross hit a long-ball to give Altoona the lead once again. The hosts built their largest lead (21-16) after Greening hit two free throws at 8:04. But that would be it for Altoona, as Hilbert regrouped and outscored the Lions 25-11 through the rest of the first half. Stark was credited with eight straight points to end the period, helping the Hawks to a 40-32 lead at the break.
Hilbert connected on 45% of their shots from the field and outscored the Lions by 10 on fast-break points while holding Altoona to 32% shooting from the floor.
Hilbert continued to stretch their lead after intermission and by 10:55, after Jalen Smith's back-to-back three pointers, the Hawks had a 70-51 grip on the game. The visitors sank 17 of their 30 attempts (57%) by the final horn and held the Lions to 35% field goal shooting.
With Stark and Hodge coming off the bench, Hilbert's bench outscored the hosts 36-21. The Hawks netted 54 points in the paint (16 more than Altoona) and sprinted to a 29-4 fast break points advantage.
Hilbert will be idle until next Saturday's league game at Franciscan University in Steubenville, OH beginning at 2pm December 14.
