Brooklyn, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team was upended by Division I St. Francis Brooklyn on Wednesday afternoon by a score of 83-54. Senior Brandon Serrano (Hempstead, N.Y.) led two Dolphins in double-figures with 14 points, while classmate Gerard Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y) led the team with nine rebounds.
After falling behind 3-0 in the opening moments on Wednesday, the Dolphins rallied with five straight points to take their only lead of the game at 5-3. Arian Novaj (Bronx, N.Y.) got his first career bucket to start the spurt and Antonio Johnson (Fort Johnson, N.Y.) canned a three-pointer 59 seconds into the tilt to push the Mount in front.
The Terriers would retake the lead on a Ben Mockford triple with 17:52 to play in the opening frame and St. Francis would not trail again in the contest. The Dolphins would keep their deficit under double-figures until another Mockford trey moved the home side in front by 11 with 8:40 left before the half.
Mockford's triple would start a string of three-pointers on three straight possessions for the Terriers, a stretch that moved them in front 35-23 with just over seven minutes left in the first period. Serrano would sink a three for the Dolphins in the final half minute as the Mount went to the break trailing 45-36.
Mount Saint Vincent shot a steady 46.2-percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, but St. Francis converted on 57.1-percent of its field goal chances and canned eight triples to build the halftime advantage. The Terriers featured eight different scorers in the half, while Serrano led all players with 12 points at the break.
The Dolphins would struggle from the field in the second half, going just 6-for-34, on their way to being outscored 38-18 after the break. Jalen Cannon scored the Terriers' first 10 points of the half in the first 4:33 of the period to get St. Francis in front 55-38.
Mount Saint Vincent would be held to just one field goal over the first 10:45 of the second half before stringing together five straight points to cut its deficit to 13 with just under nine minutes remaining in the game. That would be as close as the Mount would get as Yunus Hopkinson drilled a three-pointer as part as a 9-0 run to get the Terriers in front 70-48 with 5:09 left in the contest.
St. Francis finished the game shooting 49.1-percent from the floor and rounded out the game with nine three-pointers. Wayne Martine led the way with 17 points on 7-for-8 shooting from the floor, while Cannon wrapped up the day with 16 tallies on 5-for-8 shooting from the floor and a 6-for-10 effort from the free-throw line.
Serrano rounded out the game 4-for-16 for the Dolphins on his way to the team-high in scoring. Johnson finished with 10 points and two assists and Christian Giles (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) handed out four helpers and scored seven points.
Fraser had a strong all-around game for Mount Saint Vincent with nine points and he matched the game-high with nine rebounds. Kevin Henry (Yonkers, N.Y.) came off the bench to go 4-for-6 from the floor on his way to eight points and four rebounds.
Overall in the game, Mount Saint Vincent shot an even 30-percent from the floor and was outrebounded 44-27. The Terriers held an eight point edge in second chance scoring at 19-11 and finished with a 45-12 edge in bench scoring on the day.
Wednesday's loss is Mount Saint Vincent's third straight and drops it to 1-3 overall on the season. The Dolphins will open league play on December 2 when they travel to Sage. Tip-off with the Gators is set for 7:00 p.m.
