BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The William Paterson men's basketball team (3-1) suffered its first loss of the season, 102-100 in overtime, at Brooklyn (2-2) Nov. 26.

Twelve lead changes and six ties marked the game's first 12 minutes, but the Pioneers took control with a 13-2 run, leading by as many as 15 (49-34, 2:30) before entering the intermission with a 49-42 advantage.

William Paterson still owned a double-digit lead as late as the 13:35 mark of the second half, 64-54, but the Bulldogs began to chip away during the next six minutes, pulling even at 75-75 with 7:22 left. Jai Kellman gave Brooklyn its first lead in 22 minutes with his three-pointer at the 6:48 mark (78-75).

Senior guard Javae King-Gilchrist (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) nudged WP ahead, 81-79, with a three-point play with 3:59 remaining, and after a 1-for-2 trip to the free-throw line by Brooklyn's Valon Djombalic 15 seconds later, freshman guard Zach Frick (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) knocked down a jumper to make it a three-point game (83-80, 3:12).

Two straight Bulldog buckets made it a 84-83 Brooklyn lead with 2:05 on the clock, but junior guard Sandy Burgos (Fort Lee, N.J./Fort Lee) answered with a jumper with 89 seconds left. A foul put Jamel Gist at the stripe and he made the second of two free-throw attempts, tying the score at 85-85 with 1:06 to play. Freshman forward Nick Smith's (Elmwood Park, N.J./Memorial) layup (87-85, 0:49) was answered by Djombalic's jumper (87-87, 0:34), and Frick's three-pointer was off target during the final seconds, sending the teams to overtime.

Sophomore guard Bright Mensah (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) and King-Gilchrist gave WP a quick 91-87 advantage, but back-to-back Brooklyn three-pointers made it a 93-91 score with 2:57 left in the extra period. A King-Gilchrist layup briefly tied the score (93-93, 2:02) before the Bulldogs scored the next three points. The Pioneers twice cut the lead to one during the next 1:41, but Egzon Gjonbalaj went to the free-throw line with 18 seconds left. He made the first, then rebounded his own miss and put it back for a layup and a four-point edge.

King-Gilchrist's trey made it a 101-100 game with 10 seconds remaining, and William Paterson fouled Djombalic with eight seconds to play. He made just one free throw, leaving the door open for the Pioneers, but King-Gilchrist's layup was blocked during the final seconds.

King-Gilchrist led all players with 31 points and eight assists. Junior guard Jaques Conceicao (Massama-Lisboa, Portugal/Francais Charle Lepierre) posted 20 tallies, six assists and a team-best nine rebounds, while Mensah had 14 points and eight boards. Burgos chipped in 14 tallies.

Gjonbalaj paced Brooklyn with 24 points, and Djombalic had 18 tallies and 17 rebounds.
