PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team grinded out a 75-72 victory against Simpson College Saturday on Bo Ryan Court.
The Pioneers and the Storm tied twice and had seven lead changes. Simpson was able to run on the Pioneers, out scoring UW-Platteville 12-0 on fast break points and 13-7 on points off turnovers. The Pioneers had a 14-3 edge on second chance points, and shot 48 percent to SC's 42 percent from the floor.
Junior Jim Stocki led all scorers with 21 points, followed by classmate Jake Manning with 20 points. Chas Cross was the only other Pioneer to score in double digits with 15 points. The Storm's Dillon Gretzky netted 21 points and Austin Hennings and Drew Bentley scored 11 apiece.
The Pioneers had an 11-point lead with 15 minutes to go, but a 9-0 run by Simpson brought it to a single possession game, 51-49, with 12:09 to play. Any time the Pioneers tried to make a run, the Storm countered but couldn't get over the hump. Simpson trailed 75-72 with 18.1 seconds left, and a timeout was called to draw up a game-tying play, but a contested fade-away three-pointer by SC's Gretzky was to long, giving the Pioneers the three-point win.
UW-Platteville wraps up its weekend on Sunday at 3 p.m. when the Pioneers face off with St. Olaf. Augustana and Simpson will kick off the final day of the Pioneer Classic at 1 p.m.
