BRISTOL, R.I. – For the fourth straight game, the Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team had a second-half lead erased, as Coast Guard Academy held off the Hawks late with a 66-65 win Saturday afternoon.
The Bears trailed by as much as 16 during the game and were behind by 12 at point in the second half before mounting the comeback win.
The Hawks began the game with six straight points on buckets Chris Bardwell (North Andover, Mass.) and Josh Syska (Peabody, Mass.) before Coast Guard responded with six points to tie the game.
A pair of free throws by Trevor Fahmy (Bedford, N.H.) helped spark an 8-0 run for the Hawks to regain the lead for RWU. The Hawks ultimately took a 30-14 lead on a three by Zac Thompson (Woodbridge, Conn.) with 6:37 left in the half for their largest advantage of the game. RWU would ultimately go up by nine (35-26) into the second half.
A jumper by Will Gerencer (Bowdoin, Maine) put the Hawks back up by 12 (44-32) with 17:33 to play. From that point, Coast Guard ran off a 10-0 run capped off by a layup by Eli Sponseller (North Pole, Alaska) to bring the Bears within two.
Adrian Chuquillangui (Manassas, Va.) later brought Coast Guard within one (48-49) on a layup with 10:25 left, but Coast Guard just could not take the lead. It would not be until the 5:23 mark, when Ryan McNeil (Plymouth, Ind.) put in a basket to tie the game at 57. He would later knock down a three-pointer with four minutes left to give the Bears the lead.
The Hawks would come back late in the contest, with Joseph Henry (Medway, Mass.) converting a three-point play with under a minute to go to put RWU back up by one (65-64). On the next Bear possession, Devonte Weems (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) bounced in a baseline jumper with seven seconds to go that ultimately served as the game-winning shot. The Hawks were unable to get a clean look at a shot in the closing seconds, as Coast Guard escaped with the win.
Weems led the Bears with 12 points along with five assists. Sponseller finished with 11 points and four rebounds, while David Anderson (Goose Creek, S.C.) added ten points and four boards.
Bardwell notched his first career double-double, going for 14 points and 11 rebounds. Syska added 12 points and six rebounds, while Henry chipped in with 12 points off the bench.
Roger Williams (0-4) hosts Wheaton next, while Salve Regina goes to Coast Guard (1-3), with both games on Tuesday.
