ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior Jack Giles and sophomore Maurice Mills each connected for career-high point totals for host Nazareth Saturday as the Golden Flyers defeated the University of Rochester in a non-conference men's basketball game, 94-84, at the Kidera Gymnasium.
The victory enabled Nazareth to remain unbeaten at 3-0 overall. Rochester slipped to 1-3.
Giles scored 27 points as he hit 11 of 12 shots from the field and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line. He also had four rebounds and three assists. Mills scored 23 points by making 7 of 13 shots from the field. He also had seven rebounds. Senior Brad Ford also had a strong game for the Golden Flyers with 20 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Golden Flyers took control early as Ford scored 12 of his points in the first half for a 41-34 Nazareth advantage. Nazareth continued to build upon its lead in the second half. A basket by Giles with 12:53 to go extended the advantagre to a game-high 16 points at 61-45.
The Yellowjackets stayed within striking distance by making free throws. They made 19 of 21 foul shots in the second half and 29 of 31 (93.5 percent) for the game. Nazareth still led by 10 points, 83-73, after Mills completed a three-point play with 2:59 left.
UR then scored the next seven points to close within three, 83-80, on a pair of free throws by Tyler Sankes with 1:31 left. Giles answered for Nazareth by converting a three-point play of his own following a drive to the basket, then Mills followed with a dunk and freshman Jack Mulcahy sank a pair of free throws with :36 left to push the lead back to 10 at 90-80. Mills and Brad Ford each made two more free throws apiece to keep Nazareth in control.
Nazareth shot well from the field, hitting 31 of 58 shots (53.4 percent), including 5 of 16 attempts from three-point range (31.3 percent). Nazareth went 27 for 36 from the foul line (75 percent). Nazareth also enjoyed a 39-23 rebounding edge with Mitch Ford grabbing eight boards and scoring nine points before fouling out late in the game.
Sankes paced UR with 25 points. Kevin Sheehy added 21 and Nate Vernon had 17.
Nazareth returns to action Tuesday for its first-ever meeting at Alfred State. Game time is 8 p.m.
