The Millikin men's basketball team scored a 79-76 win at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa on Nov. 22. Millikin improves to 4-0 on the season while the Duhawks drop to 1-2.
Millikin shot 51 percent from the field while Loras connected on 36 percent. Free throws kept the Duhawks in the game connecting on 33 of 41 attempts (80.5 percent) compared to only 16-28 (57 percent) for Millikin.
Millikin controlled the first half with the largest lead being 13 points. Millikin had a 36-28 lead at the half. Loras made several runs in the second half pulling within one point on several occasions, but the Big Blue meet the challenge each time including a stretch that saw Millikin's Jaylon Owens score four straight baskets for the Big Blue to maintain the Millikin lead. Loras took its only lead of the game at with 71-70 with 4:10 left in the game. Millikin's TJ Griffin answered with a rebound and put back to give the Big Blue the advantage back for good at 72-70. Two free throws each from Jacob Kueker and Owens would push the Millikin advantage to five. Loras would make one more run pulling to 77-76 with 21 second left, before two Tives Gardner free throws sealed the victory.
Griffin led the Big Blue with 28 points including 19 in the first half. Kueker had 15 points for Millikin Owens had 12 points all of them coming in the second half. Shaq Edwards had a team high six rebounds for Millikin.
Mirko Crcic led the Duhawks with 17 points.
Millikin will play at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Nov. 23 at 7 p.m.
