Franklin & Marshall Deals Keystone First Setback of the Season, 72-66

Lancaster, PA – Franklin & Marshall College saw all five starters reach double figures on their way to a 72-66 victory over Keystone College in non-conference men's basketball action Tuesday evening in Lancaster.  The Diplomats, who closed the first half with an 11-0 run to break open a tight game, picked up their first win of the season to improve to 1-2 while Keystone falls to 2-1 on the year.   
 
Trailing by six early in Tuesday night's contest, Keystone used a 13-0 run over a five-minute span to hold a 16-9 lead with 12:22 remaining in the first half with Miles Dargan (Orlando, FL/Wekiva) starting the burst with a three-pointer while Dan Candemeres (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) and Jesse Longmire (Harlem, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) tallied five points apiece in the run.  F&M chipped away at the Giants' lead, tying the score at 24-24 with 5:44 left on the clock.  After Longmire scored on a layup to put Keystone back in front at the 5:44 mark, the Diplomats scored 11 unanswered points to close the half and take a 35-26 advantage into the break.
 
Jon Salandra and Cedric Moune scored eight points apiece to lead F&M in the opening 20 minutes of play as the Diplomats connected on 57.7 attempts from the floor in the period.
 
Keystone, who got 10 points in the period from Candemeres and seven from Longmire, connected on just 35.7 percent of their field goal attempts in the first half.
 
Rashaud Kelley (Farrell, PA/Paul Laurence Dunbar) scored the first bucket of the second half to cut the Giants' deficit to five points, but the hosts used a 6-0 run to lead by 11points, 57-46, with 9:31 left in regulation.  Keystone again narrowed their deficit to six points, but a 5-0 run pushed F&M's lead back to 11 points with 6:06 remaining.  Keystone countered with a 13-4 run to narrow their deficit to 68-66 with 2:35 remaining, but the Diplomats would hold on for the win by going 4-6 from the free throw line in the closing minutes.
 
Moune finished with a double-double to lead F&M with 15 points and 14 rebounds.  Terrel Phelps tallied 14 points on the night while Matt Porter contributed 13 points in the win.  Salandra and Joe Krong each scored 12 points for the Diplomats, who shot 55.8 percent from the floor for the game, went 3-8 from three-point range, and hit on 11-21 free throw attempts.
 
Candemeres paced Keystone's offense with 16 points while Duncan Lunsford (Marietta, GA/Sprayberry) tallied 14 points while pulling down a team-leading eight rebounds to go along with four assists.  Longmire was the third Giants' player in double-figures with 12 points.  Candemeres also added three assists and three steals in the loss for Keystone, who struggled offensively, shooting just 35.4 percent from the field including a 10-31 effort from beyond the arc while going 10-14 from the charity stripe.       
 
The Giants will return to action this coming weekend at the Hoopsville Tipoff Classic hosted by Stevenson University in Owings Mills, MD.  The Giants will take on Trinity University (TX) at 2:00 p.m. on Friday before meeting the University of La Verne on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
