Warhawks Top Falcons in Home Opener

With the scored tied 1-1, Quardell Young (Kenosha/Bradford) gave UW-W their second lead of the game on a layup with 19:16 on the clock and the Warhawks never looked back. Whitewater opened the flood gates with a 21-2 run to take a 22-3 lead with 14:26 left in the first half. The lead would hit 20 at the 10:45 mark with the Warhawks leading 30-9 and the gap widened to 30 points with just under two minutes remaining in the half, 55-24. From that point on, the lead never dipped below 30 points the rest of the game.

In the first twenty minutes, the Warhawks posted 30 points in the paint, half of them credited to Egan. KJ Evans (Beloit/Beloit Memorial) added 11 points in the first half and led all players with six boards at intermission. UW-W shot nearly 64% from the field while holding CUW to less than 32%. 

Andrew Bryson nailed a three-pointer off an assist from Young to hit the next milestone in the game, a 40 point lead, 78-38, with 11:31 left. The Warhawks led by as much as 46 multiple times in the second half. The gap was 36 as the scoreboard read 106-70 when the final buzzer sounded. 

Whitewater shot 57% (39-68) from the field in the game compared to 37% (21-57) for the Falcons. The teams combined for 70 free throws in the game. The Warhawks hit 72% (23-32) from the charity stripe and CUW made good on 24 of their 38 opportunities (63%). 

Egan led all scorers with 20 adding seven rebounds in the game. Evans increased his total to 15 and grabbed game high honors with eight boards. Reggie Hearn (Milwaukee/Marshall) and Cody Odegaard (Poynette/Poynette) rounded out the double digit scorers for UW-W with 11 a piece. Guards Alex Merg (Greendale/Greendale), Patrick Souter (Racine/St. Catherine's) and Young combined for 13 assists and five steals.

The Warhawks will stay in Whitewater for their next game with Hope College visiting Kachel Gym Friday, November 22. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00.
