Bears fall to Rams, Golden Knights cage Roos in North Country Invite finales

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Farmingdale State (2-0) overcame the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (1-1) 71-63 in the final game of the Casella North Country Invitational in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. Clarkson University (1-1) blew out SUNY Canton (0-2) in the early game, 85-67. Bears' captains Rob Duquette (Peru, N.Y./Peru) and Zac Adams (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) were named to the all-tournament team. Adams had a career-high 20 points and Duquette recorded his second straight double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

The Bears rallied from an early deficit to build a 41-30 lead with 15:00 remaining in the game. However, the Rams reversed the momentum with hot shooting from senior guard Tim Johnson (Queens, N.Y./Springfield Gardens). Johnson shot six-for-eight from three point range and scored all 24 of his points in the second half as Farmingdale led by as many as 11 in the final period. The Bears got to within eight on a three-pointer from Joe Estramonte (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich) with 1:07 remaining, before falling by the 71-63 count.

Adams scored the Bears' first 10 points of the contest. Freshman forward Gage Ellis (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) had a collegiate-best seven points and Estramonte matched him.

Johnson's 24 points was a game-high, while Ram senior guard Jonathan Annan (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) added 17 points and seven assists. The tournament Most Valuable Player, senior guard Terence Henderson (Bronx, N.Y./Wadleigh), closed out the weekend with 14 points and eight rebounds.

Farmingdale outshot Potsdam 38 percent to 34 and edged the Bears 50-49 in rebounds.


In the early game, the Golden Knights scored the first 10 points of the contest and built a 17-2 lead over the shell-shocked Kangaroos just 5:07 into the contest and never looked back. Clarkson's lead ballooned to 23 twice during the contest and Canton never got within 10 points.

Golden Knight junior guard John Coleman (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) finished with a game-high 29 points and 11 boards for his second double-double in as many games. Sophomore guard Felix Abongo (Beacon, N.Y./Iona Prep) also had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Marques Charlton (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) scored 15 and grabbed seven boards and junior guard Dylan Hodownes (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Batavia) was the fourth Golden Knight to reach double-digits with 12 points.

Freshman guard Sam Annorh (Queens, N.Y./Pathways College Prep) led Canton with 14 points.

Clarkson shot 53 percent from the floor to Canton's 49 percent and outrebounded the Kangaroos 43-24.

The Bears are back in action next Saturday, when they travel across town to face Clarkson at 4 p.m. in Alumni Gymnasium.
