Mavs Drop Close Game Against Cortland In Season Opener

More news about: Medaille

BUFFALO, NY - In a game where no team had a lead greater than seven points, it would only make sense the game would be decided on the final shot of the game. Unfortuntately for the Mavs, they came up short as they would drop the game (61-59) over Cortland.

The Mavericks would battle back late as they found themselves down by seven with just over six minutes to go in the game. They would bring the deficit to just four with two minutes remaining and then both teams would trade baskets down the stretch.

There were two chances late for the Mavericks to tie the game with under a minute left, and both chances didn't fall, leading to a tough defeat to open the season.

The Mavs did well as they hit on 18 of 24 (75%) from the free throw line which was better than Cortland, who only converted on 14 of 20 (70%) from the charity strip. Medaille did struggle late in the game from the line, hurting their chances to close the gap.

Medaille also struggled on the glass as they were outrebounded 29-23 and gave up (18) offensive rebounds while only pulling in seven of their own.

Leading the Mavericks offensively was Jammal Coleman who finished the game with (20) points while Chris Willingham finished the game with (12) points. Sean Bellomo contributed on both sides of the ball, scoring (6) points, grabbing (6) rebounds and finishing with (3) blocks.

The Mavs (0-1) will host Buffalo State at the Sullivan Center Tuesday at 6 p.m.
