Freshman leads LaGrange to first win of 2013-14 season

GREENSBORO, N.C. - LaGrange rallied in the second half for its first win of the 2013-14 season; stopping Johnson & Wales (N.C.) 88-83 in the consolation game of the Guilford College Invitational on Saturday.

For the second straight game, freshman Isaiah Core led the Panthers (1-1). Core scored 14 of his 22 points in the second half. He was 6-of-11 from the field and 9-for-11 at the free throw line.

The Panthers had five players in double figures. Mike White followed Core with 16 points. Mark Wagner added 15, Dustin Baxter 13 andBraxton Ford 11. 

There were 15 lead changes in the first half. The Panthers used an 8-0 run to go up 39-34. Wagner, who was 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, hit back-to-back 3s followed by a jumper from Ford.

The Wildcats (3-5) outscored the Panthers 9-1 to close out the half. Joshua Cohen's trey in the closing seconds gave the Wildcats a 43-40 lead at the break. Cohen would lead all scorers in the game with 24 points.

The Panthers used an 11-0 run in opening minutes of the second half to take the lead for good. Wagner started the run with a defensive stop, then fed Ford for a layup at the other end.

White scored the next seven points, the last three completing a three-point play. Donta Daniel's basket off a steal by Baxter put the Panthers up 55-47 with 15:22 remaining.

The Panthers did not give up the lead the rest of the way. A jumper by Core gave the Panthers their largest lead, 63-52 with 12:07 left.

The Panthers play at Pensacola Christian on Tuesday.
