ALLENTOWN, PA. -- Freshman Arron Goodman scored 25 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to help Gwynedd Mercy win its season opener with a 76-73 win over Hunter in the first game of the Scotty Wood Tournament hosted by Muhlenberg.
Junior Justin Knight 14 points while Seth Heinicke had 16 respectively. Each was a rebound shy of adding their own double-double.
The Griffins (1-0) led 42-31 at halftime and held off a late run from the Hawks to pick up their first win of the year.
Knight added a game-high five assists along with a pair of steals. Gwynedd would hold a big rebound edge, grabbing 40 (12 offensive) caroms compared to Hunter's 20.
A 7-0 run from Hunter with under five minutes to play turned a 12-point Griffin lead into a 65-60 contest. Two Frankie Drayton free throws put the Hawks down by one but Heinicke sealed the deal as his steal on Hunter's final possession led to a Darnell Artis layup with seconds to go.
Drayton led all scorers with 29 points as both squads had similar team totals, the Griffins were 28-of-61 (45.9%) from the floor while the Hawks were at a 25-of-55 (45.5%) clip.
Gwynedd Mercy will take on the host Mules, who were 95-55 winners over Bryn Athyn in the today's other matchup, tomorrow in the championship game at 8 p.m.
