Men's Basketball Wins Thrilling Overtime Game in Quarterfinals

More news about: John Jay

NEW YORK, N.Y.— John Jay men's basketball's two all-stars Isaiah Holman and Jamar Harry put on a textbook performance displaying why both were all conference players this year, as Holman netted a career-high 35 points and Harry recorded a triple-double as the Bloodhounds beat York College 81-78 in an overtime thriller in front of a standing room only crowd in the quarterfinal round of the 2013 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) /Con Edison men's basketball championship.

With the win, John Jay, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, advances into the semifinal round to face No. 2 seed Baruch College on Thursday at Nat Holman Gymnasium on the Campus of City College of New York. The winner of that game will play for the conference championship against the winner between No. 1 College of Staten Island and No. 4 Brooklyn College on February 23 at 5 p.m.

Holman connected on 12-of-19 shots, including 7-for-12 from behind the three point arc in the win. Meanwhile Harry scored 15 points, had 13 rebounds and 10 assists for his first career triple-double. He also had five steals in the victory. Korede Griffith also chimed in with a nice game of 15 points, seven rebounds and six steals. In all, a true team effort.

York College was led by Tony Vails with 30 points on 10-for-18 shooting, while Donald Rodriguez added 15 points off the bench. Shamir Wilkinson added a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds along with five blocked shots.

John Jay led 44-36 at halftime in a game that saw nine ties and six lead changes. The biggest lead of the game was 10 when the Bloodhounds were ahead 19-9 with just under seven minutes gone by.

The Bloodhounds led by as much as nine in the second half and were up 47-38 with 16:55 to go. But York raced right back and used a 12-1 run to take its first lead of the second half as the Cardinals went ahead 50-48 with 12:44 to go.

From that point, neither team led by more than four the rest of regulation. The final twelve minutes saw six ties and three lead changes.

With York leading by two, Harry hit a shot in the paint to tie the score at 67 with 3:07 to go.

After that, both teams failed to score over the next two and a half minutes as the score was still deadlocked with under a minute to go. Then with forty-six seconds left, a field goal by Harry put the Bloodhounds ahead 69-67. York failed to score on the ensuing possession, before a foul by the Cardinals put John Jay at the free throw line for a one-and-one with twenty-one seconds to go and the shot clock turned off.

However the Bloodhounds, who were 15-for-32 from the charity stripe, missed the front end of the single bonus, giving York a final shot with just under eighteen seconds remaining.

On York's final try in regulation, a three point attempt fell way short, but Wilkinson was under the basket and turned it into what turned out to be an unintended alley oop to tie the score with about two seconds remaining to force overtime.

But the Bloodhounds had another gear, and led from start to finish in the extra session. John Jay led by as much as eight, and the Bloodhounds led 79-71 with 1:08 to go.

The exclamation point field goal for John Jay came with under ten seconds to go after a missed shot attempt by York led to an easy fastbreak dunk by Darryl Dennis to give the Bloodhounds an 81-75 lead.

Vails nailed a three point shot just before the buzzer to get the York deficit to three, but time expired as John Jay advances to the semifinals for the first time since the 2007-08 season when the Bloodhounds won the conference title.
