HAMBURG, NY – Joel McIntosh became the eleventh Redhawk to register 1,000 career points but La Roche men's basketball (16-10) was upset by Penn State Behrend (19-8) 55-48 in the AMCC Tournament Semifinal. Penn State Behrend will play Medaille in the AMCC Championship tomorrow.
La Roche played tough team defense and distributed the ball well to gain a 30-23 halftime lead. Seven Redhawks scored baskets in the first twenty minutes including McIntosh and David Jackson who recorded 6 points apiece.
La Roche held a 35-28 advantage at the 16:23 mark but Penn State Behrend chipped away at the Redhawks lead before it was all square at 43-43 with 4:12 left to play.
Nick Delisio put the Lions up 45-43 with a layup at the 3:12 mark but senior captain Derek Barber-Richards responded a minute later with a short jumper to even it up. Penn State Behrend's Russ Conley hit two free throws on the next possession and the Lions went 10 for 12 from the charity stripe in the final minute to hold on and advance.
"We knew coming in that it was going to be a battle and we put ourselves in a great position, but a couple bad breaks cost us," said Coach Tinkey. "We are extremely proud of our guys and we have nothing to hang our heads about."
Jackson scored 11 points and grabbed 8 boards and Derek Barber-Richards added 11 points. Andre Flanigan finished with a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with 5 points and McIntosh registered 6 points to hit the 1,000 point plateau.
La Roche held the advantage in most statistical categories including rebounds (36-31), points in the paint (30-20), and second chance points (13-6). However, the Redhawks committed ten more team fouls and Penn State Behrend made them pay by going 16 for 23 from the foul line.
Coach Bott talked about Joel's achievement after the game.
"I'm so proud of our big man. He's worked very, very hard and his game and leadership has grown and evolved into a big piece of what were are as a team. His achievements put him in the conversation of best post players in the program's history."
La Roche will await a possible ECAC bid which will be released on Tuesday.
