Brooklyn Comeback Attempt Falls Short in CUNYAC Semifinals

New York, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team, the fourth seed in the 2013 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC)/Con Edison Men's Basketball Championships, fell short of pulling off an upset in the semifinals, as the Bulldogs were defeated by the top seeded Dolphins of the College of Staten Island, 71-65, on Thursday evening at Nat Holman Gymnasium on the campus of the City College of New York (CCNY).

Brooklyn concludes the season with a 12-14 overall record, while CSI improves to 21-5 overall on the year to advance to the championship final on Saturday, February 23rd at 5:00 pm at CCNY's Nat Holman Gym.

BC took an early 9-4 advantage over the opening two minutes to start the game. Senior Steven Grant netted five of the Bulldogs' nine points in the span. The Dolphins would answer quickly with a 10-4 run, to take their first lead of the game at 14-13 with 15:09 remaining before the halftime break. Bloochy Magloire drilled a pair of threes to key the run for CSI.

From that point on, both teams would exchange baskets and leads. After senior Jeffrey Noel put Brooklyn back up 19-18 with 11:03 left in the half, the Dolphins would outscore the Bulldogs 19-10 for the remainder of the period to take a 37-29 halftime lead.

With BC trailing by 10, 42-32, the Bulldogs rattled off 11 straight points to once again take the lead at 43-42 with 15:06 remaining in the game. Senior Kavon Baker poured in nine of BC's 11 points in the run.

Both teams would continue to trade scores and leads as the final determination of the game would come down to the final minutes.

Trailing by two, 51-49, with 12:05 left before the final buzzer, the Dolphins used a 7-0 run to once again take control of the game and go ahead 56-51 at the 9:08 mark. Brooklyn would again chip away at its deficit and would get to within one, 60-59 (4:51), on a three from Grant; however, CSI would again pull away on a jumper and three from Magloire to go up 65-59 (2:50).

The Bulldogs continued to claw away and made it a two-point game, 65-63 (1:03); however, the Dolphins outscored the Bulldogs, 6-2, hitting key free throws in the final minute to close out the game and earn the 71-65 victory to advance to the CUNYAC Championship final.

Brooklyn was led by Grant's game-high 21 points and six rebounds, while Baker finished the game with 19 points, six rebounds and three steals. Noel added 13 points, five rebounds and three asssits. Freshman Egzon Gjonbalaj had eight points and six rebounds.

CSI was paced by Magloire and Javon Cox, as the duo scored 17 points each. Cox also grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds to record a double-double. Jon Chadwick-Myers chipped in with 14 points and five steals, while Matthew Van Manen contributed with 13 points. Dylan Bulger helped crash the boards with 12 rebounds. The Dolphins out-rebounded the Bulldogs 52-33 for the game.

For the game, BC shot 39.4% (26-66) from the field, including going 5-for-17 (29.4%) from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs also shot 72.7% (8-11) from the free throw line.

CSI shot 38.1% (24-63) from the field and 33.3% (5-15) from three. The Dolphins also benefited from the charity stripe, converting 18 of 24 attempts (75.0%), to help aide in the win.

In total, the game featured six ties and 11 lead changes.
