Blazers Fall in Heartbreaking 2OT Classic to Lycoming, 97-95

More news about: Hood

FREDERICK, Md.—The Hood College men's basketball team (14-11, 8-10 Commonwealth) fell to Lycoming College (16-9, 9-9 Commonwealth) 97-95 in double overtime on senior day to conclude one of the most exhilarating and heart pounding games in program history. The game was a rollercoaster ride from the get go and saw Lycoming tie the game with desperation three's at the end of regulation and the first overtime. The loss ended Hood's playoff hopes and capped a season of missed opportunities for the Blazers.

Junior guard Cameron Cook ended his fantastic junior campaign with another gut wrenching performance scoring 27 points on 8-14 shooting. Cook's six made three's on the game gave him 89 for the season, which left him just one short of most three's in a single season. This was also the ninth game this season when Cook has hit at least five three's in a game, which leads the Commonwealth conference. Cook was matched every step of the way and then some by Lycoming's Anthony Martin, who ended with an impressive 35 points on 11-19 shooting.

Senior forward Justin Stone ended his Blazer career with this 11th career double-double scoring 12 points and corralling 13 rebounds in his final game. Sophomore forward Reggie Daniels also had a stellar game with 16 points on 7-9 shooting, while Justin Bowens and Matt Galloway were also in double-figures with 14 and 15 points respectively. Senior Trey Quinn also had a very good game, as he ended just one assist away for the most assists in a single game with 11 on the afternoon.

In a closely contested game throughout, the drama really started to unfold towards the end of the second half. Bowens hit a clutch three to give Hood a 69-66 lead with just over a minute to play. Lycoming split a pair of free throws on its next possession and neither side was able to convert on its next possession sending senior Trey Quinn to the line with a 69-67 lead. Quinn was able to hit the first free throw, however his second rimmed out and gave the Warriors life. Lycoming called a timeout and set up a high screen that released Patrick Dougher at the top of the key and he buried an NBA range three to tie the game. A Quinn layup just squirted out at the end of regulation to send the game to its first overtime.

In overtime Hood looked as though they were going to conquer the Warriors with two Daniels layups and two Cook three's that sent BB&T Arena into a frenzy. The 80-72 advantage could not be held though as Martin had five straight points for Lycoming to close the lead to 81-77 with 1:38 remaining. However, Daniels was able to break away on Hood's next possession and dunked with authority to give Hood an 83-77 lead that once again sent the crowd into an uproar.

Two Cook free throws gave Hood an 85-77 lead with 1:03 remaining, but Lycoming would mount another comeback. Martin hit two free throws and a layup in less than 20 seconds to bring Lycoming to within 85-81 with 22.0 seconds left. Stone then split a pair of free throws, but Chris Foreman hit a deep three to make it an 86-84 game with 14.0 seconds remaining. Bowens then also split a pair of free throws to give Lycoming a chance and they took it. Martin hit an off balance three in the closing seconds that banked in to give him 12 points in the overtime session alone to the disbelief of Blazer Nation. Hood then turned the ball over giving Lycoming a chance to win, but a Foreman three clanked off the back of the rim to send the game into a second overtime.

In double overtime Daniels hit a jumper to get Hood started and a layup by Quinn gave Hood a 91-89 lead. Lycoming would answer though with a three point play from William Wingate to give Lycoming a 92-91 advantage. It was now Hood's turn to respond and they did so in the form of a Quinn layup to make it a 93-92 game with 1:43 left in the contest. Both teams were then on the seesaw as a Michael Rudy layup gave Lycoming a one point advantage, but a Daniels jumper saw Hood back into the lead at 95-94 with 56.0 seconds remaining. Cook then fouled Dougher who made both free throws to give the Warriors a 96-95 advantage with 37.0 seconds to go. A Quinn turnover and a Jerald Williams free throw gave Lycoming a 97-95 lead with 29.0 seconds left in the game.

Hood used a timeout to set up its final play, which saw Quinn get fouled with a chance to tie the game at the line. Quinn was unable to hit either free throw, however a Stone offensive rebound on the second miss gave Hood another chance. Cook proceeded to miss a potential game winning three, but Lycoming was again unable to scoop the rebound and Hood had the ball under the basket with 1.0 second remaining. Hood attempted a lob pass to Stone for the final shot, but Lycoming converged on him and never allowed him to get a shot off. Screams from the bench and the crowd for a foul was not given seeing Hood lose an absolute heartbreaker 97-95.

Lycoming will next travel to Albright College this Wednesday with a trip to the Commonwealth championship game at stake, while Hood will be left to ponder what could have been.
