Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team held Sul Ross State without a field goal for more than ten minutes in the first half and the Cru eased to an 87-61 victory over the Lobos Saturday in Belton. UMHB ends the regular season with a 21-4 overall record and a 17-2 mark in American Southwest Conference play. Sul Ross State ends the year at 5-20 overall and 4-15 in the ASC.
UMHB scored the game's first six points and opened with a 26-6 run before the Lobos hit their first bucket at the 9:24 mark. The Cru would lead by as many as 31 in the first half before holding a 49-21 lead at the half. Sul Ross would get as close as 22 points in the second half before UMHB pulled away again despite playing all 14 players in uniform.
Thomas Orr led the Cru with 16 points and Kitrick Bell added 14 points and nine rebounds. Avery Polchinski, Brian Todd, Cory Meals and Antonie Chaney all chipped in nine points apiece. UMHB shot 52 percent in the field and went 6-19 from three-point range. The Cru out rebounded the Lobos 41-38 and forced 21 turnovers in the game.
Mychal Pinson led Sul Ross State with 16 points and Juston Weldon added 14 points and seven rebounds. Ryan Hagan also reached double figures with 10 points. The Lobos shot 35 percent from the field and 25 percent from three-point range.
The Cru will now advance to the ASC Championship Tournament next weekend in Richardson. UMHB is the #1 seed from the ASC West and will face the East Division #4 seed in the opening round. The complete bracket and tournament information will be released early next week.
