BUFFALO, NY—Buffalo State (13-10/8-9) let a 10-point lead with less than three minutes to play slip away, and visiting Brockport (13-10/8-9) escaped with a 92-84 overtime victory tonight, eliminating the Bengals from SUNYAC playoff contention.
Senior Jake Simmons (Rochester/School of the Arts) led the Bengals in his final game in the Sports Arena with 26 points and grabbed rebounds. Freshman Brad Doyley (Brooklyn/HS of Sports Mgmt) netted a career best 19 points to go with five assists and four steals, and Roderick Epps (Uniondale/Uniondale) added 16 points and eight boards. Ryan Carney (Olean/Olean) chipped in nine points and nine rebounds.
Buffalo State pushed the pace in the first half and led by as many as 12 before taking a 43-36 lead into the break. The Bengals extended the lead back to 12 in the second half and led 73-63 with less than three minutes remaining in regulation. Brockport closed the second half with a 12-2 run and forced overtime after making 1 of 2 free throws with 14 seconds remaining. Buffalo State scored first in the overtime, but Brockport took control, scoring nine of the next 11 points and pulled away for the win.
The Golden Eagles overcame hitting just 4 of 22 3-point attempts, and shot just 67-percent (28 of 42) at the free throw line. Buffalo State hit 45-percent from the field, including 5 of 12 from beyond the arc, and was 13 of 19 at the charity stripe. The Bengals committed 24 turnovers, including 15 in the second half and overtime.
Buffalo State will close its season tomorrow at Geneseo at 8 p.m.
