Reading, Pa. (Dec. 5, 2012) - Stevenson University (4-2, 1-2) shot 44 percent from the floor and had an answer for every run in a 75-66 win over Alvernia University (3-2, 1-2) Wednesday evening in Commonwealth Conference men's basketball action at the Physical Education Center.
The Mustangs took over with a 12-4 run late in the first half, then when the host Crusaders cut the gap to one point on three occasions in the second half the Mustangs had an answer. The final run a 15-3 run that put the game away with just over two minutes to play.
Alvernia, which shot 39 percent from the floor, had four players in double figures led by Terrance Bridgers (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) who totaled 16 points and 11 rebounds. Kahlil Bennett (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) hit 3-of-6 3-pointers and finished with 13 points. Lamont Clark (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara) scored 13 and Chris Davis (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) added 11.
The Mustangs got a game high 17 off the bench from Stefon McCray who hit 8-of-14 shots from the floor to go with seven boards in 27 minutes. Brett Burrier scored 16, Christian Roberts had 13 and James Milton finished with a 10 and 10 double-double.
Alvernia opened up with an 8-0 run, but Stevenson erased that and took the lead for good with a 13-2 spurt.
The lead was 11 at the half, 41-30 with Burrier leading the way for the guests with 10 of his 16.
The Crusaders cut into the lead with an 18-8 run over the first seven minutes of the second half capped by a Bennett 3. Bennett scored eight of the 18 for the Crusaders during the run.
Roberts answered the Bennett 3 with a big 3 of his own, but the Crusaders cut it back to one after a layup from Harrison Deyo (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville). The Mustangs then scored four straight for a 5-point lead, but fouled Bennett on a 3 with 7:03 to play and the junior sank the free throw for the rare 4-point play.
Milton and McCray scored back-to-back then Roberts nailed another 3 for an 8-point lead, 65-57 with 4:45 to go. That lead grew to 13 points, 73-60 when Milton scored on a layup with 2:18 to play.
Alvernia continues the conference schedule hosting Lebanon Valley on Saturday before taking a week off for finals.
