Crusaders Dominate GMC At Royal Rumble Bridgers Leads With Game-High 20

Scranton, Pa. (Dec. 17, 2012) - Sophomore forward Terrance Bridgers (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) scored a game-high 20 points and the Alvernia University (5-2) defense clamped down on a former PAC rival holding Gwynedd-Mercy College (5-4) under 60 points in an 83-59 win Monday evening in opening day action of the PNC Bank Royal Rumble at the University of Scranton.

Freshman reserve Charles Cooper (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara) hit a 3 to break an 18-all tie with 9:26 left in the first half and the Crusaders hit four 3s during a 25-7 run to take a 43-25 lead at the break.  The lead stayed at 15 points or better the rest of the way.

Alvernia will face Monday night's winner of St. Joe's / Scranton in the Championship game Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.

The Crusaders held a 13-7 lead early and the 18-all score was the fifth tie of the night.

Cooper's 3 was assisted by sophomore center Harrison Deyo (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) then Cooper followed with a defensive rebound off a GMC miss.  Chris Davis(Norristown, Pa./Norristown) followed with a pair of free throws and senior Josh Vargas (Allentown, Pa./Faith Christian Academy) converted a 3-point play to put the Crusaders up eight, 26-18 with 7:57 left in the first half.

Another 3 from Cooper and one from Kahlil Bennett (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) sandwiched a GMC free throw and the Alvernia lead swelled to 13 points, 32-19.  Bridgers then scored a free throw and a layup for a 16-point lead.

Bennett hit another 3 for the Crusaders with just under three minutes left in the half and with 30 seconds to go, a slam-dunk and the foul from Brian Parker (Chichester, Pa./Chichester) capped a 25-5 run before GMC hit a jumper at the buzzer.

Parker finished the night with 15 points and eight rebounds and Bennett scored 13.  Davis finished with seven points and a career-high 10 assists.  Alvernia shot 10-of-21 from the 3-point arc while GMC hit 10-of-21 from the free throw line.
